CAPTAIN AMERICA: Civil War (or Avengers 2.5 Minus Thor and Hulk) – HM Movie Reviews

Ladies and gentlemen, we have officially entered Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and now shit is getting real in this world, especially after the events of the mostly ‘meh’ but still serviceable Age of Ultron and the enjoyable Ant-Man.

We go back into the solo film territory….or at least we think it is since his name is in the title. That’s right, folks. Captain America is back along with Winter Soldier directors The Russos (Joe and Anthony) and with Iron Man, Ant-Man, Black Widow, War Machine, Falcon among others and some new meat on the scene in Civil War.

Political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability when the actions of the Avengers lead to collateral damage. The new status quo deeply divides members of the team. Captain America (Chris Evans) believes superheroes should remain free to defend humanity without government interference. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) sharply disagrees and supports oversight. As the debate escalates into an all-out feud, our heroes must pick a side.

All roads are leading up to this from the devastation in New York, D.C, and Sovokia and the consequences of those events with the destruction and deaths of innocents, the UN is trying to pass the Sovokia Accords and that will oversee and control the Avengers and of course, Tony Stark is for the Accords since he felt the guilt of what happened in those events (especially creating Ultron) while Steve is against it as he feels that he makes The Avengers feel like criminals in their own soil.

Now with the whole #TeamCap and #TeamIronMan established with Cap being with Falcon, Bucky, Scarlett Witch, Hawkeye and Ant-Man and with Iron Man being with Black Widow, War Machine, Vision and two other special new arrivals who I will get to in a minute.

And with those sides, I know many people are either with Cap or Iron Man…..mostly Cap because most of my friends know the comics and how much of a dick Tony is in there but in the movie….you’re conflicted yet interested in it. They are showing different ideologies about why Tony did it or why Cap would be against it. Hell, I’m Team Iron Man all the way but after what happened here, it’s hard to pick sides at this point because we see both got strong points to that.
Plus, it’s not just monotonous beating the fuck out of each other for no reason. They do talk it out first and look upon their point of view of this…….THEN they beat the fuck out of each other but for a good reason.

You see? Yes, it’s a comic-book superhero movie but guess what…..it’s not always the same ‘ol shit we get. We get a balance of intriguing drama with some excellent action (about damn time I see action where I don’t get a migraine or lose focus of it) and some little quips now and then meaning it’s more than just that one specific thing.

Now, we already know that most of the returning heroes are back and they all deliver great performances, especially Ant-Man fresh off his own movie but I got to say this…..

BLACK PANTHER & SPIDER-MAN ARE THE TRUE SHOW-STEALERS OF THE MOVIE!!!  My god, I love scenes with these two characters, especially with Black Panther and man, Chadwick Boseman played the part well and it really got me wanting to see his own movie now…..unfortunately I have to wait 2 more years for that and mostly because of one little spider. But, hey, Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Spider-Man…..that dude was great from being that charismatic character from being the normal Peter Parker to the witty Spider-Man. Maybe with Marvel Studios actually doing his own movie (again), it could be done right and hopefully not fuck up like Amazing did. Oh, and Marisa Tomei and Aunt May……hot damn.

Oh, and Daniel Brühl as Col. Zemo……he may be one complex villain that MCU movies needed in a while since most of their villains have been weak-sauce for some of the time but here, you can sympathize with the guy about what happened to him and I’m saying this without giving away any spoilers but I bet most of you knew that shit by now.

FINAL VERDICT: OK……I’m gonna say this right now. I FUCKING LOVE THIS MOVIE!! I love that they equally deliver the political thriller vibe from Winter Soldier and the rousing action vibe from the first Avengers and I love that every character in here gets their shining moment and a movie with 12 heroes fighting would’ve been a cluster fuck but it was nuanced just right. The hardest part about this is…..I don’t know how high on my top MCU movie list this’ll go to and this is definitely up there with Captain America: Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. I know it tops the first Avengers movie for me and we can say that Summer has officially started with the blockbuster season.

And with that said, CIVIL WAR gets the grade of……..

9.5 / 10 – FIRST CLASS ALL THE WAY

And with that said, I’m MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid and OH SHIT, [SPOILER!!!] AND THAT MOTHER [SPOILER!!]
