(HY)Lights #56 – ONYX Equinox (First Impressions)

Onyx Equinox" Premieres Saturday on Crunchyroll | Three If By Space

Damn, a lot of new animation has been coming this weekend, huh? First, the reboot of Animaniacs! is finally upon us and sadly, I don’t think I’ll get to that soon because I don’t have Hulu (anymore….. well, I haven’t had it in a while) but I have been hearing mixed to positive thoughts on it.

But then I forget….. there is something coming this weekend, too, and of course it’s a Crunchyroll Original.

Yeah, whenever you hear the word ‘Crunchyroll Original’, the reception you get from them is either OK, meh or just YIKES, especially when it comes to the behind-the-scenes process of it. Remember High Guardian Spice and all the bullshit going on with that? Yeah. Granted out of those originals that came out moderate to good in the end is….. well, In/Spectre back in Winter 2020.

Granted, I might be the few ones that thought God of High School was average at best (it was at least interesting until it became a mess later on)  but compared to other shows like Tower of God and the new additions of Noblesse and TONIKAWA, it’s a Ghibli movie compared to those, even the bad Ghibli movies are better than those shows. Hell, most of you saw the previews of EX-ARM and yeesh, that’s a contender for worst-looking anime of 2021.

Now, I mentioned Crunchyroll and you’re thinking, shouldn’t this be a TIME OF THE– NO! I think there’s enough material for Time of the Season content for the fall season and this falls more into American animation than anime. Yes, they make more than just anime for those that never heard such a thing. So, let’s get into this one…. Onyx Equinox.

This project comes from the mind of one Sofia Alexander, a storyboard artist known for working on shows like Infinity Train, Invader ZIM: Enter The Florpus and Powerpuff Girls….. oh, the 2016 version. But the interesting thing about the show’s premise is it centers around Mesoamerican culture and what of it. But, hey, it’s good to see something of another culture gets some representation in some form. Now let’s see what it’s all about.

“The gods are at war for the future of humanity, and an Aztec boy named Izel finds himself caught in the middle of their dangerous game. In order to save humankind, he must complete an impossible task–closing the five gates to the underworld. Izel reluctantly agrees, but only after learning his quest will also correct a terrible tragedy. His journey to become humanity’s champion will be one of hope and despair, of trust and betrayal, where Izel must confront his own darkness and decide if the human race–with all its flaws and contradictions–is worth saving.

FIRST THOUGHTS: Well, it’s a good thing that before it aired, CR did state that it may contain violence and blood and oh boy, the first half of this is the destruction of this civilization and humankind is royally fucked and I mean fucked. Green goo killing everybody, people just committed suicide or a sacrifice to themselves and everything falling and dying and all that shit. There was some character who I think may it out fine since we were so focused on her and her family as they didn’t do so well i.e. they died but then after that…..

It was on this kid and his sister, Izel and Nelli, and they’re living their everyday lives and then as soon as things got a bit happier than before, here comes the sacrifice and it was supposed to be Izel but Nelli said, fuck it, I’m not letting my brother die and so she’ll do it. Of course, Izel is upset, he wants to stop it but too late, she’s now a sacrifice and thus begin…..I guess, the rest of the show. Yeah, we kinda figure there was going to be a family death in there as soon as those two were on-screen.

Yeah, I know, it’s the set up and all and overall, it’s fine. It’s very fine. We know what we’re getting into and it can go one way or the other. Animation does look good and so is the voice work, plus it helps the majority of the voice cast being of Hispanic/Native American/Mexican descent. With that said, this does feel like what most animated shows, either they were Avatar or anything from Powerhouse Animation the past few years… as in it’s not all that spectacular in terms of plot but yet it’s still watchable enough to see what happens but I wouldn’t get my hopes too high on this. Remember when we all thought The God of HighSchool would go into greatness but ended up being too ambitious and it went off the rails? Or in Tower of God where…… well, that show was a bore and a half so they can’t be fixed to be honest and Noblesse……we don’t talk about that one for now. But here’s hoping this show is at least good in the end.

I’m MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid and I wonder how many people are doing to bitch about this not being anime? I swear, y’all are some spoiled motherfuckers.
