Yeah……. once again, the world has been nothing but a dumpster fire and everything is getting worse by the minute every day.
I can repeat what terrible shit has happened the past 3 months (especially the last couple of days) but you’re not here for that. You need a breather from all that and I’m not joking, you sometimes need to find the good things in life to calm your senses down…. like anime.
Yep, after most shows got delayed due to CO-VID, it looks like some things are getting back at track…. maybe. Dino & Gal is scheduled to re-air next season but thankfully the Spring shows that got delayed came and finish their run and one of them is definitely a lock of being in the top 10. However, for the summer shows that did air and had no problems with their scheduling….. well, damn, the top shows that aired this season were Netflix shows and one of them isn’t even done airing yet and yes, that honor goes to Great Pretender. This show is just amazing and the way to watch it is like watching back to back crime-caper movies with some interesting pasts of some of our characters. This got me super ecstatic to see how it ends.
And of course, there’s BNA and Aggretsuko 3. For the former, the story can be a bit disjointed but always manages to stay interesting throughout and while not the top tier Trigger show, it’s still a damn good show full of vibrant visuals, unique characters and a bomb-ass soundtrack. For the latter……yup, I think this wrap things up for Aggretsuko. I mean, they should end at this part unless they got one more OVA out of them because there’s nothing left to do. But still, it ended well with once again, some harsh life shit thrown at you especially with being an idol in Japan. Oh, and all of these are getting (9/10).
And if you wondering where Japan Sinks is at……. well, keep wondering. (Note: This show is OK but between this and Eizouken, the latter is clearly the superior Yuasa show this year.)
As for shows continuing into next season…..Fire Force Season 2 and all I can say is that it’s a bit better than the first season but not by much and this is an unpopular opinion but wow, I don’t care for Inca. We get it, she doesn’t want to be saved by the Fire Force and rather be with the bad guys or whatever shit she’s doing. If she’s going to be the antagonist, fine but don’t act like I’m supposed to be enthralled by her because I’m not. She comes across as a bitch and not one I’d be compelled to like or route for, just irritable as hell. Oh and if you wonder why you don’t see Re:Zero S2 on here, like I said, I’m just watching the dub at this point (same goes for Fire Force as well).
As for the rest of the shows…….I can say that the final scores won’t be samey but there is some OK shows, a lot of mids and some fucking duds.
Speaking of mid……
LAPIS Re:LIGHTS // Yokohama Animation Lab // Funimation
Mid. Meh. Very mid and meh. Yeah, you know how way back in the 2010s, people called K-On kind of boring and while sometimes I see that, at least they kick it up a notch and make it entertaining at least. This on the other hand is your typical magical school girl show that happens to be an idol show and look, it’s mostly singing, magic shit and trying to not get expel. It got boring pretty fast and I certainly didn’t care for the idol shit. You want a good magical show? Watch Little Witch Academia TV. It’s more fun and worthy of your time (also not created by a known transphobe). Want some idol shows? Well, Love Live is there but this…..no one is going to remember this in…..yeah, already forgot. (5/10)
DIARY OF OUR DAYS AT THE BREAKWATER // Doga Kobo // Funimation
This is one of the shows that aired at the Spring season but got delayed and I’ll be honest, it fits better airing in the Summer season because the tone of it just works better airing it this season than spring. The show’s content is just these girls going in the world of fishing club and their shenanigans, adventures and all that. It’s similar to how I feel the other Doga Kobo show that aired this year. It’s cute, has a lot of fluff, you learn some things about whatever they’re doing and yeah, this is an OK show. (6.5/10)
DECA-DENCE // Studio NUT // Funimation
This series managed to throw a curveball…. in its 2nd episode and look where we are with it! It’s also a show where I see people are either very enthralled by it and yet disappointed by it. You were expecting some Mad Max-ish apocalyptic steampunk action adventure show but we get an inverse video game-ish type of thing where the humans are merely avatars and some weird alien-like cartoony looking creatures with some of the aforementioned elements in there. It’s a good adventure anime but I do feel like you’ll get lost if you don’t pay much attention to it. (7/10)
THE MILLIONAIRE DETECTIVE – BALANCE:UNLIMITED // Cloverworks // Aniplex of America (Funimation)
This is the second show I’ve watched that got delayed from Spring to the Summer season and I’ll admit at first watching this, I wasn’t all the way on board with this show because I wasn’t feeling the main character at all because he was basically some rich asshole but the more I watch it, the more I realized he’s a rich asshole that actually use his money to help people solve crimes and there’s some good dynamics between Daisuke and Haru with the whole opposite personalities going for it. This makes up to be a fine detective series worth checking out and hey, there’s a dub of this now and once again, Funimation is getting these Aniplex USA shows that exclusively stream on their service. (7/10)
NO GUNS LIFE SEASON 2 // Madhouse // Funimation
Speaking of shows which dub I need to go back and once again, another show that was supposed to air in Spring but blah blah blah, you know the rest and yes, this show still remains to be interesting in its 2nd cour from exploring the roots of how Juzo ended up having a gun for a head and what went on in Mary’s past. It still has good animation and visuals, some kick-ass music from the OP and ED songs and I still imagine somebody would want a Juzo body pillow and calling him his Grimy Waifu (and no, I won’t stop saying that.). (7/10)
SUPER HxEROS // Project No. 9 // Aniplex of America (Funimation)
So we got Super Horny Super Sentai Power Rangers and it is what the show implies, only thing is while that aspect may be very absurd, it does fall into average territory when it comes to the characters and I’m not expecting complex characters here but it has the basic trend of harem characteristics, especially the lead girl and guy and if you’re just here for the nudity….. you better hope there’s some uncut masters coming to the Blu-ray soon because BROADCAST meaning you need white blurs and flashes. Again, very absurd premise with average results. (5.5/10)
PETER GRILL AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S TIME // Wolfbane // HiDIVE/Sentai Filmworks
This could’ve worked if this was just an hentai and well……OK, it is but instead of feeling satisfied, I feel dirty and annoyed. It’s basically all these demi-human women want to slob on his knob but of course, he feels guilty because he doesn’t want to cheat on his girl. I should feel sorry for him but yet I don’t. It happens every episode and yeah, I get repetition but it makes me sigh a lot. Hell, I feel bad for his girl, who thinks he’s loyal but even her pops sees he ain’t shit. Also, that ogre girl that was called ‘ugly’…… yeah, I get it but damn, she was cute as hell. I know if this guy were single, I enjoyed it more but it would mean less conflict but at least I can enjoy this like I did with Interspecies Reviewers…..at least from what I saw before it got taken down. Yeah, this show is a dud. (4/10)
UZAKI-CHAN WANTS TO HANG OUT! // ENGI // Funimation
OK, everyone tripping about this show and its “controversy” is driving me insane from the CHUDs using the show to be assholes on the internet to make those stupid gotcha videos (I’m not linking them or giving them my time) to the narrow-minded thoughts of Uzaki’s appearance being a short and well-endowed woman meaning she’s a child…..and the thing is the show does nothing controversial. Yeah, there’s a few times where some emphasis on…. well, y’know, but this is just a breezy slice-of-life show about a very eager college student that befriends this one loner guy and the friendship does develop well in how spending time together brought out some good vibes between them. Some might find it to be dull and hey, at least it’s something of an opinion other than what’s on the surface level but to me, this was a grower and it was pretty good. Also, I love the fact that Monica Rial voices her as her voice fits the character to a tee and this is getting a second season? Yeah, I’m for it. (8/10)
APPARE-RANMAN! // P.A. Works // Funimation
OOOOOOOH! I’m so glad this continued this season after it got the delay because this show is just that motherfuckin’ good!!! Like Deca-dence, this is something based on what we saw in PVs looked like a Wacky Races-type of anime but further in the show, this has some thrilling action, good character interaction/development among the racers, tense moments of what shit to go down and overall both a fun and interesting ride of an anime. Plus, major props to the people at Funimation and Caitlin Glass for the dub and its cast being diverse as fuck!! This show is a top contender for Anime of the Year for me. (9/10)
RENT-A-GIRLFRIEND // TMS Entertainment // Crunchyroll
Well, this was something. It’s the “how many lies are you going to tell before this whole shit blows up in your face” type of show and this sums up my thoughts of everyone in this show like Chizuru’s a saint, Mami…… yeah, just damn, she’s some work, Kazuya’s a moron, I kinda feel bad for Ruka and I would say more on the other one but she’s the shy one that most otaku would say ‘they love and protect’ and that’s all. Nothing wrong with that but that’s all I got from her. Also, dub-wise, loved Lizzie Freeman and Laura Stahl as Chizuru and Mami and Aleks Le is just having a ball of a year in voice acting. The show itself…..it’s a decent rom-com anime and it’s getting another season as well. (7/10)
THE MISFIT OF DEMON KING ACADEMY // SILVER LINK // Aniplex of America (Crunchyroll)
Welp, I got one positive thing to say about this and Aleks Le is phenomenal in the dub. His performance may be the best aspect of this show because everything else is just DDDUUULLLLLLL!!!!! It’s the same type of show that was everywhere a couple of years ago and I think it’s trying to be funny and absurd except some of the humor doesn’t hit as much. “Oh, look he’s one year old despite being a teenager!! He got so many girls on his arm!! He can kick your as from here to the next school! He can kill you and bring you back to life!!!” On the surface level, it might be cool but everything else around this is generic, dull and pre-packaged like a Lunchable. You may like it when you were young but it gives me indigestion now. I’d say this might stop but we’re getting the sequel to that Mahouka show from 2014……yeah…… (3/10)
MONSTER GIRL DOCTOR // Arvo Animation // Crunchyroll
So, this is very, very mid. Like I know what most folks watch shows with monster girls for but something about it just feel tedious from the format of the monster girl of the week, the interaction between Doctor McOKish to his assistants and patients with the usual “Oh, is he perving or not?” shit and the assistant who obviously has a crush on him gets on him for that and the usual medieval setting anime shit that has been done before. I’ve said that the medieval setting hurt the show more than helped it and overall, it’s a show that you will probably forget after you’re done watching it. (5/10)
THE GOD OF HIGH SCHOOL // MAPPA // Crunchyroll
Weird shit happens in the latter half of this show as the tournament goes and as much as I try to fathom what the hell went on….. at least it was more entertaining than the entirety of Tower of God and no, I won’t stop tearing that show down a peg. God of High School, on the other hand, actually has more going for it in terms of great fighting animation and characters you actually give a crap about. It’s probably not going to be on my best list anytime soon but at least it was a solid popcorn show. (8/10)
GIBIATE // Studio Elle/Lunch Box // Crunchyroll
Oh yeah….. this show. This show that got low ratings across the board especially from CR holding at a 1.9 (or a 2.0) and I was surprised this didn’t get a dub considering it’s a CR Original but then again, I get why this show was passed on and for a show that may or may not sound relevant right now with this damn pandemic with time-traveling samurai, it is BORING!!!! Something like this would’ve been a lot of fun but it is dreadful from the plot, the awful dated animation, the bland music score, and our uninteresting main leads. I hope the next CR original series be better than this slog of a show. (3/10)

Welp, we got one more season to go in this fire dumpster of a year and Fall looks to be pretty packed with the return of long-established anime like Haikyu, Golden Kamuy, Higurashi…… The Irregular of Magic High School…. yeah, that gets a 2nd season airing exclusively on Funimation and of course, the one y’all been waiting for, Attack on Titan The Final Season as animated by MAPPA and it’s coming on DECEMBER 7th!? So they just want fuck airing in October, let’s air it at the tail-end of the year, huh? Hell, I bet some proclaim it as AOTY even though it’ll be 3 episodes in.
Again, I got to re-watch Season 3 before that happens and at least I got plenty of time.
Oh and there’s new entries like Jujutsu Kaisen ….. from MAPPA. Damn, y’all need a break or something; that one anime about a high school girls’ climbing team; another isekai with By the Grace of the Gods; another CR original with Noblesse and also Onyx Equinox, which is coming in November IIRC and of course, the one every fan of the past show has been waiting for, Yashahime, the successor to Inuyasha.
That’s it for now. I’m MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid and I wonder if that Mahouka show is getting a dub after all.
