Hmmmm……what’s that? An magical girl anime that has an unique premise and setting and style?
Let’s see about this one.
This is Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka.
Director: Hideyo Yamamoto
Character Design: Yoko Suzuki
Animation Production: LIDEN FILMS
Plot Summary: Three years ago, alien invaders ravaged the Earth–until they were defeated by a group of young women blessed with powers from a mysterious source. The girls went back to their normal lives after vanquishing the ghastly monsters, but that time of peace is about to end. The same malevolent creatures have resurfaced, which means it’s time for the Magical Girl Special Ops force to head back to the battlefront and defend mankind.
First Thoughts: OOOHH!!! THANK GOD THIS ISN’T TRASH!!! OK, for the past few years ever since the existence of… well, you know…. there has been a bunch of magical girl anime that got a dark tone to them. Some of them work (Yuki Yuna) and others have been dogshit (Magical Girl Site… aka my pick for worst anime of last year) and this show manages to have that dark tone but not wallowing in it or being grim for its own sake. To be honest, I feel like if Call of Duty was mixed with a magical girl anime, this would be it and I’m glad for that switch-up. It can’t always be the simple fantasy shit we know from past shows. I’m liking both the action and the calmer moments of the show and if it manages to not shit the bed, this could have potential to be great.

I’m MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid and OK, I guess magical girls got dog tags as well.
