Anime Discovery and Time of the Season present: THE TOP 20 BEST ANIME OF 2018!!

Now we are down to the best of the brightest!! The cream of the crop!! The actual name-brand product you want to get and not the bootleg shit!!!

As I mentioned before in the worst of list, things have changed in anime in 2018 from dismantling an anime service that wasn’t doing any favors for anyone to a partnership we knew and like for a couple of years ended. Now, last time some shows I put on my list were on Amazon and in this year….. OK, since this is a top 20 this time around, it’s 4. OK, like four in my top 10 last year but it’s actually 2 in my top 10 in 2018. Meanwhile, Netflix….. also has 4 spots and they are all in my top 10.

Well, that was anticlimactic.

Oh, and it looks like with shows like Mob Psycho 100 II and Rising of a Shield Hero heading to both CR and Funi, looks like I’m still using that CR/Funi tag on my next ranking list.

OK, let’s get this show on the road.

20.

DOUBLE DECKER: DOUG & KIRILL // 13 EPS // SUNRISE // CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION

This show was a lot of fun to watch during the Fall season even if I got confused at what the fuck happened after episode 10. A spiritual successor to Tiger and Bunny only instead of a 25-episode series with superheroes on reality TV, it’s a 13-episode show with detectives and some supernatural shit in there as well. I love that we do get some equal share with our characters and they get their own episode, the interactions and humor is downright hilarious especially coming from the narrator and some genuine emotional moments in there as well. I really want more of this. I would be down for a sequel series…… then again, so did people that wanted a 2nd season of Tiger and Bunny.

19.

LAID-BACK CAMP // 12 EPS // C-STATION // CRUNCHYROLL

Yeah, this is the other cute girl show in Winter 2018 and I have to be honest, I liked this a bit more than A Place Further Than the Universe. A chill, relaxing and inviting show that oozes a lot of charm and I like that the friendship among the girls is either around in-person or texting. Sorta like how many of us talk to our friends from afar today. The name is definitely what the show implies. It’s laid-back and relaxing.

18.

SSSS. GRIDMAN // 12 EPS // TRIGGER // CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION

Look, after Darling in the FranXX, I was worried how this was going to turn out and while this isn’t the top-tier Trigger show (again, those are Kill La Kill, Space Patrol Luluco and Little Witch Academia), this was a damn good mecha ride. Some super Sentai fans are definitely need for a treat and its ending will make you go WTF but in a good way.

17.

After the Rain screenshot

AFTER THE RAIN // 12 EPS // WIT STUDIO // AMAZON

OK, this show could’ve gone wrong. Reading the synopsis of this sounds like nothing good could come of it. However, the attraction between Akira and Kondo is nothing sexual and they actually focus on overcoming some shit with their past (Akira with track and Kondo with going back to writing) and it comes off as a very poignant show. Probably the most poignant show WIT has ever made.

16.

DAGASHI KASHI 2 // 12 EPS // TEZUKA PRO // CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION

OK, despite some changes like reducing it from 22 minutes to 11 and Hotaru not being the show as much, the show never lost its touch from their topics of candy, dealing with some real shit and the crazy antics inside the dagashi! Also, Hajime turned out to be a best girl here, but she’s still 2nd to Hotaru.

15.

FLCL PROGRESSIVE // 6 EPS // PRODUCTION I.G. // ADULT SWIM/TOONAMI

So yeah, I actually liked Progressive more. I feel like the chaotic nature of the original is still in here but more zany and wild. The themes of adolescence, growing up, and dealing with teenage shit in its own weird-ass way. Again, I’m glad that I liked this as much as I did earlier this year.

14.

Megalo Box screenshot

MEGALO BOX // 13 EPS // TMS ENTERTAINMENT // CRUNCHYROLL/VIZ MEDIA

A show I should’ve been on when it first streamed and when I later watched it, this show was the type of shit you would watch on Toonami (and lo and behold, it came true!). I may not know much about Ashita no Joe but I was digging the presentation of the anime, the characters, the art style and the music!! Oh, man, the music!! The OP is by far one of the best anime opening songs of the year!!! Oh, and having seen 2 episodes of the dub that aired on Toonami, I’m glad that Viz got it.

13.

HARUKANA RECEIVE // 12 EPS // C2C // CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION

Once again, aired in the same season as Hanebado! and I liked this one a lot more. I know some called it ecchi for some reason although it wasn’t exactly just a bunch of boob and butt shots. There is a lot of character interaction and development among the characters and they do show some accurate info on playing volleyball. Plus, the girls are legit likable. This anime just oozes Summer when you watch it.

12.

TAKUNOMI // 12 EPS // PRODUCTION IMS // HiDIVE

I’m not a big drinker by any means this is basically the drinking cousin of Dagashi Kashi as it showcases a bear or special drink (even some non-alcoholic ones) while getting into the lives of these 20-something working women living in that apartment. Oh, and unlike something like …. Grand Blue, the drinking doesn’t make me want to vomit. Oh, and also Kae is still fine as hell.

11.

DROPKICK ON MY DEVIL // 11 EPS // NOMAD // AMAZON

This was the funniest show to stream on Amazon during the Summer. You can’t help but be into the antics of these monster/devil girls. I like how Jashin is such a bitch in here and the fact that Yurine always tortures her for being shitty to her friends like the adorable Medusa and her awesome friend Minos. I loved watching this show and I would immediately watch it again. In fact, I’m going to do that after this!!

And now we are at the top 10!!!

10.

Zombieland Saga screenshot

ZOMBIELAND SAGA // 12 EPS // MAPPA / CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION

A surprise for your ass!!! I didn’t know what to expect from this anime but if you were to tell me I’d like an idol ani– wait, a zombie idol anime, I’d call you crazy. But here we are. I was so into this show going further into the series and knowing some of their stories on how they died can be either fucked up or very sad. They are many moments of endearing heart and emotion and funny moments, especially the ones with the Legendary Tae Yamada!!

9.

HINAMATSURI // 12 EPS // feel. // CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION

Another anime that just sneaked up on me. I admit that this show got some funny chops during the first couple of episodes but further in….there’s laughs, some action and some– OK, I get I use the word “emotional” a lot recently but once you see this show, you’ll feel it. Plus, it has great comedic timing, a colorful cast of characters and that one weird moment snuck in there in some episodes, especially near the end. I do hope for a Season 2 of this….again, hope.

8.

Banana Fish screenshot
BANANA FISH // 24 EPS // MAPPA // AMAZON PRIME

Now we into some mature shit and I mean, mature that’s actually subtle and not just stupid edge-lord bull shit and Banana Fish is the anime that can make you uncomfortable but can still tell a worthwhile story that has some great action, character development and insight within our protagonists and antagonists. Props for MAPPA for making some great work this year.

DEVILMAN CRYBABY // 10 EPS // SCIENCE SARU // NETFLIX

OH MAN!!! This show fucking wrecked my ass!! I didn’t intentionally check it out upon initial release, it was in October but I felt like I did the right thing watching it at that time. This is a story that is very tragic, heartbreaking, bloody and oozing with sex as well. But don’t forget…..it’s all about CONTEXT!!! Not just throwing gore and violence on a wall and calling it art. Plus, Masaaki Yuasa did his thing on this and while I do respect the man’s work, this is the first time I have gotten this invested in a show he fully directed. (Sorry, fans of Ping Pong and Tatami Galaxy.)

6.

HI SCORE GIRL // 12 EPS // J.C.STAFF // NETFLIX

I watched this a few days ago on Netflix and I was immediately into this show. Holy fuck, this was good!!! I really love the 90s nostalgia trip with these video games even though I’d still be a little kid at that time but other than that, the story with these characters are the main reason why I was so into it with Akira mainly a mute (often grunts and make sounds provided by the lovely Christine Marie Cabanos in the dub) and how she plays video games to escape her very hectic controlled life and you feel for her and there’s Koharu (in the dub voiced by Erika Harlacher), who was once an introverted girl but has become a bit sociable and also gotten into video games herself. Yeah, pretty much these two are the best characters of the show. As for the lead Haruo, he’s still a good lead and all and very into games as well. But really, this show got so much to offer.

5.

WOTAKOI: LOVE IS HARD FOR OTAKU // 11 EPS // A-1 PICTURES // AMAZON

OK, this is the right way to make a romance anime about otaku, especially them as adults! They’re adults that got their regular office jobs while doing that otaku life that often clashes with their everyday life. It also helps that it has a romantic sense while not trying to be that romantic. Not only this is the best romance anime of 2018, but the best romance anime that focuses on otaku and does it without resulting into harmful stereotypes.

4.

Hisone to Masotan First Visual.jpg

DRAGON PILOT: HISONE TO MISOTAN // 12 EPS // BONES // NETFLIX

This was a wonderful and inventive show that has an abundant amount of comedy, drama, emotional weight and adorable dragons ready for flight. This show also deals with finding what you want in your life, trying to distance yourself even though that can’t always happen, the plight of the working woman in Japan, sexism in the workplace especially in the military and some workplace romance as well. Yeah, this does have a tonal shift in things happening but it’s not much to complain about. Plus, that ED song is so infectious.

3.

MY HERO ACADEMIA SEASON 3 // 25 EPS // BONES // CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION

You know this show was going to make it here regardless. Once again, the show continues to have a good pace and even the filler is some breathing room to ease from the action (i.e, the villains invading their training camp, them kidnapping Bakugo, All Might fighting with All for One, etc.) and there is so much action in here, maybe not as flashy as previous seasons (well, they were working on the movie, which I still need to see). Bottom line, MHA is still that anime that can be popular and the hype of it is still well-earned.

2.

AGGRETSUKO // 10 EPS // FANWORKS // NETFLIX

Welcome to the most relatable anime of 2018!!!! If you’re someone who hates their job, doesn’t like their boss, gets shoved with work that other motherfuckers doesn’t want to do, have a good friend crushing on you, and you let all that anger out by singing death metal in a karaoke bar? This is the show for you and while you can heavily relate to Retsuko here, you also see how these other characters are like how Gori and Washimi are like the boss women in there but they struggle with life as well or on Haida’s crush on Retsuko and when he sees her dating other women, he doesn’t go full “Nice Guy” mode but still values his friendship with her. There’s a lot of things to look into when watching this but also remember it is a humorous satirical anime with cute, chibi animal characters in them.

And now……. the moment you actually expected a few days ago….

1.

POP TEAM EPIC // 12 EPS // KAMIKAZE DOUGA // CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION/HiDIVE

For those that wonder…… why is Pop Team Epic my number one anime? Why is a show that is merely shitposting and memes a number one anime for me? Why is this show that has Bob Epic Team my #1 pick? Well….to say it’s just shitposting and memes sounds like a diss towards it. The people behind each segment put their effort and minds into making their vision come to fruition from the music videos, the puppetry, the different animation styles, even the Bob Epic Team segments that are reminiscent to shows like 12.oz Mouse. It also helps when you either watching the sub or dub, you’ll be like “HEY, I RECOGNIZE THAT VOICE!!!” This was the funniest anime I have watched all year and most absurd at that and having seeing it a bunch of times this year and that’s in simulcast, simuldub and Toonami airing, I will say that Pop Team Epic is my #1 anime of 2018.

WHOOO!!!!! And that is now a wrap for 2018 anime!!!

I’m MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid and I’ll be asleep on my couch until 2019.
