Welp, you know what it is, ladies and gentlemen.
That time again where I give you my final impressions on the new seasonal shows that I watched and once again, I have watched a lot. Like the last time, I have watched over 20+ anime including holdovers from the last season and yet unlike the massive block of Netflix anime that came late March, I’ve only watched one and reviewed that one so we’re good on that.
Oh, and also, FLCL Progressive is still running on Toonami but the review for that should come out soon.
Some highlights of the season that Amazon managed to have the best and worst Spring show and yet their simulcasting is still shit. There have been complete surprises that I didn’t cover that I eventually watched and really, really—well, liked. Not loved but glad I check it out. There’s also the new edition of Sentai Filmworks and their Dubcast anime and while I’m glad they’re on that boat, I wished they picked better anime than what we got but hopefully next season should change that….or at least if that happens again, I’m sticking with the dub of that.
For shows continuing to summer…..Persona 5 The Animation, Lupin the 3rd pt. V and My Hero Academia S3 are those chosen ones as they managed to rank from being good to just oh, so damn great and that applies to the latter very, very much. As for the other 24-episode show Kakuriyo……yeah, that’s dropped like a motherfucker. 9 episodes in and wow, I was just not into this and it seemed to go nowhere in terms of plot or anything interesting at all.
And now, for the results…..
UMA MUSUME: PRETTY DERBY // P.A. WORKS // Crunchyroll
You know….this show is quite decent. It’s a good mix of being a moe show and a sports anime. It does the usual things of going through hardships of winning, friends, idol singing, all that cutesy stuff with horse kicking and it was a delight to watch every Sunday. Hell, compared to the other shows I watched that aired on Sunday, this one doesn’t go WTF on me. A very solid show in my opinion. (7/10)
LOVE TO-LIE-ANGLE // Creators in Pack // Crunchyroll
So this didn’t end up being the yuri Love Hina, which is actually a good thing but it is basically a harem anime with all the tropes and tricks, only it’s yuri flavored. To say I’m glad it’s not horrible is good but I wouldn’t put this on a best-of list so there’s that. (5/10).
You know, there was really some great romance anime that premiered this season that I would instantly recommend to people…..this isn’t one of them. In fact, this is the antithesis of the good romance anime I’ll mention later. Tsutsui seems like someone you want to route for but on the other hand, he’s a damn moron and while I get he doesn’t know much shit about dating 3D girls, it doesn’t make me him relatable, just an idiot and is everyone in that school just an overly exaggerated dickhead or bitch? Hell, the only characters I like and tolerated are either the stereotypical nerd girl and neko best friend. Yes, they don’t have much character but they didn’t get on my fucking nerves. No….just skip this fucking show. (4.5/10)
TADA NEVER FALLS IN LOVE // Doga Kobo // HiDive/Sentai Filmworks
Now for one of the good romance anime that debuted this season and we got ourselves a good one here. Although to be honest, this is more of a friendship anime that can blossom into something of a romance and it helps the leads are quite likable and appealing to watch, especially with Tada is mainly into his photography and Teresa being energetic and full of excitement and amaze in Japan. It’s definitely a feel-good anime provided by Doga Kobo. Plus, the side characters are fun to watch as well, especially Nyanko Big and his moments on-screen. (8/10)
COMIC GIRLS // Nexus // Crunchyroll
I don’t have a lot to say about this one except the usual, as in, you know this is a cute show and all and while I haven’t seen previous shows similar to this (New Game, Shirobako), you still get the same experience on being a manga artist of today with the different styles the girls choose, them meeting deadlines, meeting their fans and influences and of course, the silly shenanigans in there. (7/10).
WOTAKOI: LOVE IS HARD FOR OTAKU // A-1 Pictures // Amazon
Damn it, I was too lazy to cover this for first impression and maybe because Amazon is still poor at promoting their anime simulcasting (I really hope this noitanimA deal with them ends soon) and yet……this show was excellent. It’s a great blend of slice of life/romance/otaku life without them either being cringey, depressing or melodramatic and it helps the characters, while being likable, relatable and enjoyable to watch…..they’re actually adults!! Adults with regular-ass office jobs that also do their weeb thing as well and dealing with their otaku life that possibly clashing with their regular everyday life. But, yes, Wotakoi is a must-watch if you’re looking for something romantic that’s not all that romantic. (9/10)
HINAMATSURI // feel. // Crunchyroll/Funimation
Welp, this turned out to be the surprise comedy anime of the season or at least one that has much laughs, action and heart with each episode as it goes on, even if you got slightly confused on how the show started and ended. I mean, you seen the first episode of this and into the last episode of this….you’ll get that feeling of “Oh…..so that’s what that was leading to.” Still, it left me with a satisfied smile on my face with its comedic timing, cast of colorful characters and a weirdly, interesting story arc that leaves people wanting more of it. I hope there’s a Season 2 coming to this. (9/10)
SPACE BATTLESHIP TIRAMISU // GONZO // Crunchyroll/Funimation
Out of the short-form anime that premiered this spring that’s not Aggretsuko, this one is the best out of all of them but not by much. Yeah, this can be very funny although some of the material can fall flat in few episodes but hey, that’s like 30% I didn’t feel. The rest…..this is some funny shit right here. (7/10)
MY SWEET TYRANT // Yumeta Company // Crunchyroll
Um……No. Just…..No. The whole joke is basically the boyfriend acts like a douche to his girl but secretly he acts all lovey-dovey to her and she knows it and…..? Oh boy, even if it’s 3 and a half minutes an episode, this is just so fucking stupid and it just reminds me why I’m not fond of the tsundere trait in anime, even in male characters. Yeah, I know they are good ones but right here is the worst example of that. (3/10)
MAGICAL GIRL SITE // production doA // Amazon
Yes, I have watched every episode of this and each episode finds a new way to be either gross, mean-spirited, obnoxious and wallowing in its edgy edge-lord bullshit and I thought Magical Girl Raising Project was bad but at least it got some restraint and a bit of class. This is some unholy dumpster juice that comes from a mind that’s fucked up but not in a creative way. (2/10)
DEVILS’ LINE // PLATINUMVISION // HiDive/Sentai Filmworks
Well…..this kinda vampire love story/action series was something. I will say while the love story is your cliche vampire love story, at least it wasn’t rapey as Diabolik Lovers was but like any other story, the guy is your average brooding devil with a tragic past but now in a procedural crime show setting and at least he wasn’t completely boring and the girl…….hey, she’s cute and all but that’s it. The action parts are fine but still average to the anime. Overall, while not terrible, it’s very middle of the road and sometimes unintentionally funny. You’ll see. (5/10)
BEATLESS // diomedea // Amazon
Yeah, this shouldn’t have been a 24-episode series or as of now 19 with 4 recaps as of this writing because I don’t think they trust their audience on following the story but can you blame the audience with something that gets thoroughly boring at the halfway point? Yeah, yeah, there’s a bunch of robots and shit and this robot girl who can be a bad-ass if she wants and the main guy is……there. Look, this mostly makes me glad I didn’t do a first impression of this in the Winter and maybe I should’ve left it alone because this is about as blase as this show got. (4.5/10)
DARLING IN THE FRANXX // A-1 Pictures (Cloverworks)/Trigger // Crunchyroll/Funimation
So…..the amount of controversy this show has gotten in the past few months especially in the Spring from pregnancies, marriages, saying either Ichigo did nothing wrong or she fucked up big time, and a bunch of other messy shit I’m not trying to get myself into. But all I know is…..I knew this show was bound to go WTF the moment the first episode happened and here we are. In terms of shows by Trigger, even though A-1 or Cloverworks are a big part of this as well, this is definitely the low-tier of their shows, even though it’s pretty split if you love it or hate it, although I’m just in the middle. It did get interesting during the latter half about the past of Zero Two and the Klaxosors but the stuff with the main pilots had a lot of misses. I wanted to give it a chance and I did….this is not going to be Worst of the Year material for me but it’s something that will gather dust in my memory. (5.5/10)
SWORD ART ONLINE ALTERNATIVE: GUN GALE ONLINE // Studio 3HZ // Aniplex of America
So, yeah…..I actually liked something out of SAO and it’s this particular show. Gee, I wonder why? Let’s see…..the main character that is skilled but not over-powered along with a better backstory, the writing is actually better since the original material is done by a better writer that doesn’t resort to sexual assault or attempted rape or superfluous fanservice….or at least lessen that down while it still has a few things that is a SAO anime. Look, in comparison of the first two series, this one is a masterpiece and I can exactly see the good in this franchise….but guess what? I’m not checking out SAO3. Fuck that noise. (7.5/10)
CALIGULA // Satelight // Crunchyroll
Um…..this is supposed to be an idol show because while there is some idol music in here, it’s either forgettable or it sucks. The show itself is a confusing blah mess of a show that depends on it being an artsy show with these angsty teenagers going through shit or them surviving a game or something, at least I got that from the first episode or something. OK, fuck it, I tried watching this and trying to get sucked in but it never worked. It’s just too damn frustrating for me to get into. (4/10)
CUTIE HONEY UNIVERSE // Production Reed // HiDive/Sentai Filmworks
OK, I see a lot of low ratings for this show on Anime-Planet (yeah, MAL, too, but I gave up on that site) and very little talk about it but that’s on my end but this show is….not that bad. Maybe it’s because I’m not that heavy into the Go Nagai stuff and yes, I still haven’t watched Devilman Crybaby yet. This manages to have some OK comedic moments, decent action scenes and one moment in the series that was a straight gut punch when [spoiler!!] and while it is quite edgy, it’s not edgy to where it gets gross, disgusting or think it’s fun when you’re not having any. (6/10)
GOLDEN KAMUY // Geno Studio // Crunchyroll/Funimation
You know even with the bad CG in here (CG BEAR, BITCH!!), this show wind up being marginally entertaining and brutal when it comes to the action moments and with Sugimoto kicking ass and defying death and Asirpa being the best character in there. Again, it may not be the hype show people wanted it to be, it’s still OK to watch but if I have to give one complaint about it, that Man with a Mission opening song was BOOORRRIINNNNGGG!!! (7/10)
DOREIKU THE ANIMATION // TNK/Zero-G // HiDive/Sentai Filmworks
Damn, this show was very stupid and yet it’s stupid in a way where I need to keep watching. From slavery to abuse in every way possible to from this high stakes of games of beating the shit out of people and to having every character with a back story, even the damn dog a couple of episodes gets a narration on his story and yet I rather follow the dog than the rest of these fuckers. Most of this shit don’t make sense at all and I was still left confused and head-scratching. The only thing that kept me watching this and Devil’s Line is the Dubcast initiative from Sentai Filmworks as those are the two shows they dubbed for that. Other than that, it isn’t worth checking out. (5/10)
MEGALO BOX // TMS Entertainment // Crunchyroll
A show that after hearing so many good things from and yes, it’s another one where I didn’t do a first impression of but after watching 3 episodes, I was on board and after while I have to say…..this is quite good. This is a damn good watch and yes, I’m watching another sports anime that had something that hooked me whether it was the animation/art style that feels like an classic anime I’m watching on Adult Swim, the boxing scenes were pretty cool and the soundtrack is my FAVORITE part of this anime!! Damn, I’m glad I caught on this but to ask another question: Why didn’t this get dubbed? You can’t say it’s a sports anime because a lot of that is getting dubbed and maybe it’ll get one later on, probably from another studio that’s not FUNi and…..really? Dances with the Dragons gets a dub but this gets ignored? SMH. (8/10)

And the heat is just getting started and I don’t mean the weather, which is whether hot as hell or rains all the damn time!! But, yeah, I’m going to take it easy the next season of anime and TRY not to overindulge myself in the newer anime. Then again, there isn’t much anime that piques my interest. Yeah, there’s Attack on Titan S3 but that’s the notable hype anime of there. The others…..well, not into Free but y’all enjoy that and some others I’m just checking out a few like Banana Fish, Sirius The Jaeger and some more shows that I’m giving a look at.
I’m MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid and….no, seriously, I’m trying not to put too much new anime next season…..and now some tunes.
