TIME of The SEASON Winter 2018 Edition: DARLING in the FRANXX

Yep, you know that time was coming. You knew that I was looking forward to this series and practically anything by this studio and I’m betting you think I’m instantly going to give this a high grade on this because of said studio.

Then again, this is a co-production with another studio that I am not that fond of although some of their projects I have enjoyed but it’s not much.

Now is the time I give up my thoughts on the most anticipated anime of Winter 2018 and yes….

…..this is Darling in the FRANXX.

Plot Summary: In the distant future the land is ruined and humanity establishes the mobile fort city Plantation. Pilots produced inside Plantation live in Mistilteinn, also know as the “birdcage.” Children live there knowing nothing of the outside world or the freedom of the sky. Their lives consist of battling to carry out missions. Their enemies are mysterious giant lifeforms known as Kyōryū, and the children pilot robots called Franxx to face off against them. For the children, riding the Franxx proves their existence. A boy named Hiro is called Code:016, and he was once known as a prodigy. However, he has fallen behind, and his existence seems unnecessary. Not piloting a Franxx is the same as ceasing to exist. One day, a mysterious girl known as “Zero Two” appears before him. Two horns grow out of her head.

First Thoughts: OK, so children are piloting robots in the distant future and they live to carry out missions and those that failed are better off dead because freedom is fucked over there! Although I have to admit….the whole story with this kid Hiro aka Code:016 and his failure of becoming a pilot and what happened to his partner…feels generic. Yeah, like from that whole scene with him and his partner departing from that area and his friends talking about him behind his back. I sense that was coming from a mile away although at first, I didn’t want to believe it because that type of writing seems by-the-numbers mecha shit to me but it happened. I will say that I do like 002 as a character. A bit eccentric but more interesting to latch on to than Hiro to be honest and I did like the mecha fight right at the end.

Yes, I know not to expect another KLK or Gurren becau– Wait, I KNOW NOT TO EXPECT THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE! Oh, and yes, this is the Trigger/A-1 Pictures anime I’ve been hearing about last year and I admit I was cautious hearing that because A-1 is a mixed bag of an animation company. It got its highs and lows when it comes to shows, but I hope this isn’t another low for them.

The episode itself is decent, setting up the story and the world surrounding it. I just hope good things can come out of it.

I’m MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid and dude, next time if you see a girl’s clothes lying in the forest and she’s swimming, DON’T PICK UP THE PANTIES!!!
