Well, damn. December already? This year has went by fast, hasn’t it? Thankfully, this season hasn’t tired me out as there is a substantial amount of shows I really liked and loved and it helps that the majority of the good shows I have watched has been on the weekends….well, Friday and Saturday.
Another good reason why I liked this season is because a show I was looking forward to didn’t get the Anime Strike treatment. Look, I know about Inuyashiki but since that’s noitaminA, that was destined for that site anyway and for Yuki Yuna….well, I’ll just wait for Netflix to get it (again).
And of course, we still got shows running into 2018 such as The Ancient Magus’ Bride, Garo: Vanishing Line & March Comes in Like A Lion and yes, out of all of them, March S2 is a definite winner for me. I loved tuning into this show again and how much this show gets to me emotionally. This is a easy 10 out of 10 for me….so far but I feel nothing is going to change my mind on this, this still remains one of the best anime in 2017. Garo: Vanishing Line manages to be better and watchable than both its predecessors so far and yes, the original Garo wasn’t all that good in the first place and as for The Ancient Magus Bride…..yeah, I like it but I’m not in love with it like so many others but it’s good to see Wit doing some good shows again aside from AoT and Kabaneri (and yes, I said that show was good. Not great but I can watch it and be good with it.)
Oh….and since Black Clover is now running on Toonami (that was quick!!), I am not going to keep watching the sub of this because oh man, this was BORING!!!!! This is just the Hungry-Man Dinners of shonen anime with the same annoying head-strong protagonist that shouts wherever he goes and adventures that I really don’t care to go over. It’s the Same ‘Ol Shonen Bullshit you’ll get here and it reminded me why I tend to avoid this shit. In other words, skip this shit.
Anyway……to the shows that’s finished…….
WELCOME TO THE BALLROOM // animated by PRODUCTION I.G. // streaming on AMAZON ANIME STRIKE/licensed by PONYCANYON USA
So……this was supposed to be the hype show of the summer, huh? Too bad it got stuck in Anime Strike hell and worse than that, the show didn’t end up being as good as people thought it would be. Some consider this a big disappointment and even got some backlash that pissed off Yuri on Ice fans, not to mention this was a HUGE BOMB! But hey, what did I think of this? Honestly……I was OK with it the first few episodes but then I was just ‘meh’ on it as a whole. The dancing animation was fine and while I wasn’t trying to let the designs influence my thoughts of the show (it didn’t) but damn, I.G., dem long necks and stomachs!! Other than that, I’m going to forget this in….well, now. (6/10)
ALTAIR: A RECORD OF BATTLES // animated by MAPPA // streaming on AMAZON ANIME STRIKE
I keep hearing that this show could’ve gotten more reach if it wasn’t for Anime Strike. Um, no, this show is just boring. I know, I know, this is more of a war strategy anime and sometimes the dialogue is more of the matter but then again, even with that and the action happening, it doesn’t warrant anything but a “who in the fuck cares”? (5/10)
ELEGANT YOKAI APARTMENT LIFE // animated by SHIN-EI ANIMATION // streaming on CRUNCHYROLL
Again, at first, I was definitely fucking with this. This was basically a sitcom that has ghosts living in an apartment complex and I was hesitant to give this like an 8 or higher but then the 2nd half came and it’s mostly revolving around the high school and those characters and I was slowly losing any interest of being invested in this show. It’s not bad or anything but it lost some steam for me on the way down. (7/10)
JUNI TAISEN: ZODIAC WAR // animated by GRAPHINICA // streaming on CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION
BATTLE ROYALE: THE ANIME!!!……OK, maybe not that but it’s close. I know at first people were calling this an edgy version of any Fate game or anime and it is but it doesn’t overindulged itself in its edginess. I will say don’t have a favorite character in here because one minute, they’re there and the next episode, they die a horrible death. For all it’s worth, this is moderately decent. I just wouldn’t watch it again because I don’t want to re-live a character (s) I like die over again or a character that I immediately wanted to die last longer. (7/10)
INFINI-T FORCE // animated by DIGITAL FRONTIER // streaming on TUBiTV/licensed by VIZ MEDIA
We have some Sentai/Gatchaman/Power Rangers-ish/Casshern shit for y’all in this bitch and you also got this plot about this girl who got some daddy issues and some time paradoxes and CG animation that actually looks like it’s from 2017 and not 2007 and wow, this was quite a mixed bag of things for this show. Granted, I did enjoyed it but like I said, the whole Daddy thing with lead girl here was starting to get annoying. (7/10)
URAHARA // animation by EMT SQUARED // streaming on CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION
So…..this was something of a show that has a bunch of WTF everything about it from the animation to the artstyle and the characters and while I see this show has been getting a lot of flack for it and while for me, this show was mostly something I just put on for background noise and it doesn’t warrant “WORST SHOW EVAR” for me. It is mostly goofing off and strange things like aliens and talking fried shrimp invading this town and a lot of random shit that just adds up to mostly a shrug. (5.5/10)
KONOHANA KITAN // animated by LERCHE // streaming on CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION
Ahh, this was nice and relaxing to watch every Wednesday. Plus, it helps with the colorful animation and artstyle with the yuri element played out in a way that’s very innocent and endearing. The fantasy element does plays well in the mystery is the Konohantei and the inhabitants who come there for a visit. This also has a sitcom feel to it like Elegant Yokai Apartment Life except this time, this one doesn’t over-stay its welcome and the characters managed to stay endearing and yes, this is kawaii as fuck and that’s not a bad thing. (8/10)
KING’S GAME THE ANIMATION // animated by SEVEN // streaming on CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION
“Hey, King’s Game, you met my buddies Akame ga Kill, Future Diary and Taboo-Tattoo? Y’all seem like you three would find something in common.”
And they do. They are the worst pieces of shit grim-dark edge-lord anime that I have endured in my time watching anime. Oh my god, this show gets dumber with every episode with every character getting progressively worse (especially the female characters, they had the worst development) along with the animation and the scatterbrained focus of this story being either in the past or the present and it really should’ve stuck with one mode instead of going back and forth to see characters that we either don’t like or care just die in graphic and violent ways along with trying to get us to care but we don’t. For real, fuck this motherfucking show and they had to gall to do a TO BE CONTINUED at the end. Hell, no, fuck this bullshit. Oh and here’s a shout-out to Josh aka @KhakiBlueSocks as he was doing episode recaps on Surreal Resolution and I can imagine how he deals with writing about this week after week. (1/10)
KINO’S JOURNEY: THE BEAUTIFUL WORLD // animated by LERCHE // streaming on CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION
OK…..I get that some OG fans of the show felt like this adaptation was mostly weak compared to that one and let me say that….yeah, I’m not one of them. Never saw the 2003 show and I’m just watching this as its own entity and guess what? I really enjoyed the hell out of this. THIS SHOW is what shows like Mushi-Shi and Rakugo should’ve been or at least….yes, this can be calm but it can’t be boring and I never felt bored watching this, even with some of the episodes not centered on Kino, I was still intrigued with what’s going to happen. It balances some of the calmer moments with some low-key thrilling moments in them. This is just a beautiful show for me to watch and I’m sticking to that. (8.5/10)
TWOCAR // animated by SILVER LINK // streaming on CRUNCHYROLL
So, this is a racing show, huh? Well, there were some racing to be happening and such and yet all the other things around it: the drama around all the girls seems too blase for me to be that concerned about. It’s about the two girls having a crush on their own instructor or something or one girl having some dream of being a S&M slave and….yeah, I stopped paying much attention to this show that much. This is definitely forgettable. (5/10)
BLEND-S // animated by A-1 PICTURES // streaming on CRUNCHYROLL/licensed by ANIPLEX OF AMERICA
I think the only thing we got out of this is that the opening was a hot meme at the time and while I thought initially this was going to be outright terrible…..it wasn’t. Did I think this was good overall? Well, no…..it’s not bad but at the same time, I could’ve done worse. The whole thing with the girls acting like the typical anime trope of tsundere, sadistic, imouto in this cafe and the fetishes that some certain characters have for that….well, I wouldn’t say it’s not funny but there’s a little insight in some of these. (5.5/10)
BLOOD BLOCKADE BATTLEFRONT & BEYOND // animated by BONES // streaming on CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION
As I said before, this felt like the show has never left and even with a new director helming this, it still manages to be that damn good like the original series. We do explore more of the team this time (as in Chain gets some spotlight in a couple of episodes to an episode of KK and her kid to more things with Michella) and the action and animation is still as satisfying as the first season was. I was definitely into this season a lot more than the first one and the best part about this……I didn’t have to wait 5 months to watch the damn finale. (9/10)
A SISTER’S ALL YOU NEED // animated by SILVER LINK // streaming on CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION
OK…..first episode, it took you 90 seconds to know this shit was certified trash. I know. I was stupid enough to try that shit, too, and oh god……and the thing is, those guys did the shit and quit. I stuck around for more episodes of this and….well, it’s not as awful as those first 90 seconds but man, this shit acts like it can have its cake and eat it. It thinks it can try to make the main character sympathetic for one minute but it still reminds you that he is a piece of shit. Oh, and there’s stupid love triangles, the whole thing with his little step not-brother, his stupid fixation of little sisters (and no, no matter how you try to sell it, that shit is still fucking creepy) and speaking as a writer, this fucker sucks. Maybe this is a good thing this isn’t Silver Link’s 10th anniversary project but then again, Two Car wasn’t all that good either but at least I don’t feel disgusted and awkward watching that…..that or the only Silver Link show I like is Watamote and the rest are forgettable trash or pretentious bullshit. The show can fuck itself all the way. (1/10)
LOVE IS LIKE A COCKTAIL // animated by CREATORS IN PACK // streaming on CRUNCHYROLL
Hey, this was cute and you can learn about some special drinks made in here. Even the non-alcoholic ones! (7/10)
What? This was a 3-minute format show. I’m not saying much on this.
AND THAT IS A WRAP FOR 2017!!!!! All the anime has been covered from head to toe and now……we wait…..after Christmas because I need a little break and of course, the lists are coming!!! Mainly the anime lists…the Best and Worst Anime of 2017!
Well, now we venture on to 2018 and I just realize that…..this is going to be year FIVE. This is going to be my fifth year doing this first impressions of the newest anime coming out!! And with projects like the Junji Ito Collection and Darling in the FRANXX coming in winter, it should make for an interesting beginning and I can actually watch the Trigger show when it’s airing.
I’m MAK2.0 AKA The Blue Hybrid and I hope that TRIGGER/A-1 show doesn’t suck.
