Anime Discovery – TIME OF THE SEASON Summer 2017 Wrap-up

So…..another season gone, eh? I said in the beginning of this season that there wasn’t much I was looking forward to and…..yet I checked my Anime-Planet listings for what I watched and watching list of that season and it turns out I was watching 20+ anime this summer!!….and the Interviews With Monster Girls DVD-special episode happened, too. (No shade, that episode was good.)

DAMN! It turns I did get a lot of anime to watch out of the season…..but it was all mixed results as this was another sleepwalking season where some shows I watch I just didn’t give two fucks about most of them and I actually ended up dropping some shows and by shows, I mean that one HiDive Simulcast exclusive about cute girls fighting robots and yes, they made that shit boring and generic as hell and no, I don’t care to look up the name for that and that smartphone show that I rightfully dropped after one episode.

Oh, and once again, it turns out Anime Strike has a couple of shows that were so damn good….Hell, they have 3 great shows, 3 good/ok/fine shows and 2 others that…..I couldn’t gave much of a damn about but still…..that price is still keeping most people out of there. There is also that Fate/Apocrypha and Kakegurui are not up on legal streaming as Netflix got streaming rights and worse for the latter, we won’t see it until 2018.

And again, some shows like Elegant Yokai Apartment Life, Welcome to the Bathroom, and Altair: A Record of Battles are still running in the Fall and as for how they are…..well, the former two are decent shows at best but for the latter….well, I don’t think it’s bad but I’m not getting into it as much.

One more thing, I probably not going to have much to say on some of this so here we go…….

MY FIRST GIRLFRIEND IS A GAL
(NAZ // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

OK, I know this was the how that everybody immediately pinned as worst of the season but nah, it’s not even close. I dig the relationship between Junichi and Yukana as I felt genuinely involved into their progression and rooting for the two to make it through the end…..yet the cons of this is Junichi is mostly stupid most of the time (if your girl hints she wants alone time with you, don’t invite other fucking people in her house!!), his friends are thirsty assholes (along with the fat pedophilic one) and the 3 other girls that also wants Jun’s dick (well, 2. One of them wants Yukana to herself). So yeah, this show isn’t all that bad to me. (6.5/10 – WATCHABLE)

RE-CREATORS
(TROYCA // Amazon Anime Strike)

Image result for re:creators

So hearing the premise and plot to this show 6 months back before it premiered really got me intrigued into watching this but of course I didn’t have Strike, which was a bitch and so I sometimes use a friend’s account and this show……..damn, this was definitely something I enjoy watching from the gorgeous action, the interesting dialogue and the way the show does the whole creations from anime, video games, etc coming into the real world. Everything about the show screams unique and actually entice the creative side of me…..meaning this does more shit than just sitting on your ass and yapping on about shit that I don’t care. This is for sure on my top anime of 2017. (9/10 – FIRST CLASS)

RESTAURANT TO ANOTHER WORLD
(SILVER LINK // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

Image result for restaurant to another world

You know what? It is what it is …. A very chill show with people coming from all different worlds enjoying whatever dish is served and we also get some background on these one-shot characters and the wonderfully animated food. Hell, even the seafood in here looks excellent and this is coming from a guy that doesn’t like seafood. (8/10 – Solid B.)

AHO GIRL
(diomedea // Crunchyroll)

So this show is fucking bonkers….the main girl Yoshiko has the IQ of a cocaine brick and she will annoy your ass to the twelfth level and makes a damn fool out of herself and yet I always look forward to see what will happen next. SURPRISE, BITCH! I actually like this show a bit. I know each episode is basically how stupid this girl is but they found a way to make it entertaining and also keep the shit under 12 minutes an episode. (7/10 – WATCHABLE)

TSURE-DURE CHILDREN
(Studio Gokumi // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

Image result for tsurezure children

Adorable rom-com the anime is in fact…..adorable. I’ve really enjoyed the different vignettes of these different couples and the awkwardly relatable things when you’re romantically involved with somebody. Oh, and this is also on a 12-minute format. It’s definitely worth a watch. (8/10 – Solid B.)

LOVE AND LIES
(LIDEN FILMS // Amazon Anime Strike/Sentai Filmworks)Image result for love and lies

In more romantic anime things, this time not much comedy but more drama….Yeah, having someone assigned to marry you at 16 is quite a bitch, especially when it’s not the one you’re in love with. The premise is interesting considering the whole Japan birth rate things I keep hearing seem like it might happen but the romance can be a bit humdrum in the middle. It’s like “Yeah, you love that girl and that other girl also knows it, too but you might be close to the other girl…..too….?” Look, the show is decent and all but that middle (and that ending, too) just not made me care that much. (7/10 – WATCHABLE)

SAIYUKI RELOAD BLAST
(Platinum Vision // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

OK, I will say that the action is great and comradery/chemistry between the 4 main guys are good enough but I feel like if I didn’t watch any past series of this, I would get confused and I got confused along with not caring too much about the plot of this. (6/10 – High VANILLA)

NETSUZOU TRAP – NTR
(Creators in Pack // Crunchyroll)

Secret high-school lesbian lovers the anime is……well, that. I mean, hell, it’s only 9 minutes an episode and it’s basically don’t let our boyfriends find out about this shit or better yet make sure your boyfriend don’t snitch on us. Eh, it’s whatever. (6/10 – High VANILLA)

SAKURA QUEST
(P.A. WORKS // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

Yep, this is that show that everyone was buzzing about when it debuted in Spring of this year and….after that, the buzz died a little around summer. Yet I think this show is just average as fuck and I couldn’t get into this show at all. It could be the fact it’s centered around tourism and after this, I just don’t give two fucks about tourism AND IT REMINDS ME THAT I HATE THE COUNTRY LIFE AND NO amount of feels will made me give a damn. At least Shirobako had an interesting part in that show but here…..it’s just your basic pretty-looking slice of life show. It’s not bad per se but I can find better shows than this. (5.5/10 – VANILLA)

18IF
(Gonzo // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

I don’t know what the fuck I’m watching half of the time as this is just Weird Anime: The Anime….just doing weird shit for the sake of being weird (basically anything Ikuhara and Studio SHAFT) and sometimes doing this doesn’t guarantee you’ll be good because no one is worth a damn here, you wonder if you’re high or not and it’s really not worth watching. (5/10 – AN ACQUIRED TASTE)

CHRONOS RULER
(Project No.9 // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

And speaking of things that are not good……Welp, you’re not as bad as Hand Shakers but this is just plain ‘ol generic as fuck!!! Plot feels baffling, characters are one-dimensional and the fights are dogshit boring with animation quality like a burnt potato. In other words, fuck this shit. (3/10 – NOT FEELING THIS)

GAMERS
(Pine Jam // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

So what happens if you make Tsure-dure Children, stretch each episode into 22 minutes, make the characters annoying, awkward and moronic instead of awkward, relatable and likable, add misunderstandings to every scenario and oh, and they’re gamers in case you forgot because this show has to remind you that since it’s mostly a crappy rom-com and…OH WAIT, That show would be annoying as hell, like this one! PASS!!! (4/10 – High NOT FEELING THIS)

KATSUGEKI! TOUKEN RANBU
(ufotable //Aniplex of America)

Um……uh…….well, it looks great and the action here is superb to look but honestly this is just fancy-looking background noise and I tried to follow the story from the beginning…but again, this was a sleepwalking show for me. Meh. (5.5/10 – Low VANILLA)

THE REFLECTION
(Studio Deen // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

I think I remember there was some anticipation for this show coming in the summer and after that first episode, no one gave a damn and guess what? Neither do I. There was one great superhero anime that kept running and this is not one of them. This was tedious and the interesting but weird comic-book style animation couldn’t save it. Hell, I heard the dub wasn’t all that good so I skipped out on that. At least the ED song is dope. (4/10 – NOT FEELING THIS)

CLASSROOM OF THE ELITE
(Lerche // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

So I didn’t expect to end up liking this show so much as it debuted. I was very fascinated with this whole premise of this school of dealing in its own politics, trying to survive academically and socially and I like the fact that our main lead isn’t the typical overly-optimistic student but more level-headed and aloof. This show is like a fine meal….that has a lot of cheesecake (wink wink) and sometimes it feels shoved in there to attract its targeted demographic. But still….I dig this show. (8/10 – SOLID B.)

VATICAN MIRACLE EXAMINER
(J.C. Staff // Amazon Anime Strike/Sentai Filmworks)Image result for vatican miracle examiner anime

Uh…….um……….eeee………um……..Eh. I couldn’t get into it. I tried to….the opening was nice but I reall—yeah, I watched too much shit this season. Damn it.
(5/10 – VANILLA)

KNIGHT’S & MAGIC
(8-Bit // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

Remember that show Chaika the Coffin Princess from a few years ago? I got the same vibe watching this show and in case you didn’t know this about me, I didn’t like Chaika and I’m damn sure don’t like this show as well. It’s generic fantasy with generic mecha elements along with a main character that gets all the attention because they look moe and the rest of the characters you either forget or don’t care. Like I said about The Reflection about superhero anime, there is one (actually, two) interesting fantasy anime that was running at the same time and this is not one of them. (4/10 – NOT FEELING THIS)

A CENTAUR’S LIFE
(Emon // Crunchyroll/Funimation)

So….this isn’t half bad. I say in terms of shows about monster girls, I think Interviews with Monster Girls is the better one but this one has some interesting things about life as one of these supernatural hybrid beings but that also include the mundane details that doesn’t gain much interest although that one episode where it’s WWII and the HOLOCAUST!?! WHAT THE FU—Wasn’t the opener about lesbians kissing or some shit? It’s a decent cute girl doing cute shit show with a lot of other shit happening. (7/10 – WATCHABLE)

PRINCESS PRINCIPAL
(Actas // Amazon Anime Strike/Sentai Filmworks)Image result for princess principal anime

This one is just alright. Again, I don’t have much to say about this show but I did find myself entertained with the espionage elements and the steampunk theme and….oh wait, this does the bad-ass cute girl thing better than that Battle High School Girls show. (7/10 – WATCHABLE)

MADE IN ABYSS
(Kinema Citrus // Amazon Anime Strike/Sentai Filmworks)Image result for made in abyss anime

Oh HEY! It’s an adventure/fantasy anime that is actually good and interesting and does take risks without coming out as try-hard edgy or pandering. Wow, most of the fantasy anime that I like this year has…been on Anime Strike. DAMN. I see why Sentai has picked this up…wish it was on HiDive instead. This show has lived up to its potential in being an exploration adventure anime centering on these two kids and when shit gets real….it gets real. (9/10 – FIRST CLASS)

And since we’re on adventure/fantasy anime…..

RAGE OF BAHAMUT: VIRGIN SOUL
(MAPPA // Amazon Anime Strike)

Image result for rage of bahamut virgin soul

MAPPA has been on fire this year following the success of Yuri!!! On Ice and now the sequel to one of my favorite anime in 2014 has arrived and….yeah, it’s on Strike. Fuck. And it is easily a damn good follow-up to the original series with a different lead with Nina Drango, who was delightful as a lead here and we do get some returning characters back. The action is just as thrilling as ever along with gorgeous-looking animation and design. It’s a great follow-up to what I consider one of the best adventure anime in recent years. (9.5/10 – High FIRST CLASS)

MY HERO ACADEMIA SEASON 2
(Bones // Crunchyroll/FUNimation)

So……remember when I say the top anime for me this year both has the word “academia” in them? Well, this is the 2nd one and I absolutely loved this show from beginning to end. I like that the arcs were well-paced. I didn’t think they went too long or too short and the ‘filler’ we got was actually a good episode. We get to know more about our heroes-in-training and even to some extent, I can even understand some characters’ motives, even the ones I can’t stand and by that, I mean Bakugo. (Yes, I know Bakugo is more of a layered character and all but fuck, he’s annoying as fuck) I’m also glad this got more episodes in their 2nd season and I hope for another season out because I’m having a blast watching this. (10/10 – HALL OF FAME aka You damn right I’m giving it this grade!)

Well, we are close to the last season of the year and that is…..Fall. Thankfully, Crunchyroll got some shows on lock that I want to watch like The Ancient Magus’ Bride and some material just to fuck around like Black Clover, Kino’s Journey and I really hope March Comes In Like A Lion S2 is going to stream on CR and the same goes to Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond….but from this year in terms of announcements…..I don’t have much hope to what’s going to stream or if I can afford it nowadays.

Oh, hey, that show ID-0 is finally coming to Netflix and also I’m making sure I don’t go overboard like I did this season.

I’m MAK2.0 aka THE BLUE HYBRID and TOO MANY SHOWS! TOO MANY SHOWS! I just watched TOO MANY SHOWS.

I need some tunes.
