TIME of the SEASON Summer 2017 Edition: KATSUGEKI! Tōken Ranbu

For those wondering, no, this has nothing to do with that other anime with sword boys that aired last year Touken Ranbu Hanamaru and no, I didn’t see that other one either.

But, hey, an ufotable anime and hopefully unlike the last one I saw, this one might be good…at least from the looks of it.

This is Katsugeki! Touken Ranbu.

Plot Summary: The year is 1863 as the tumultuous samurai era is coming to an end, Japan is split between the pro-shogunate and anti-shogunate factions. The fate of the world is threatened as an army of historical revisionists are sent from the future to alter the course of history. In order to bring these forces down and protect the real history, two sword warriors, spirits who are swords brought to life by Saniwa (sage), rush to Edo. The polite and thoughtful Horikawa Kunihiro and the short tempered yet skillful Izuminokami Kanesada, who served the same master, confront the invading army along with a lively gang of other warriors including Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, Yagen Toushirou, Tombokiri, and Tsurumaru Kuninaga. As the fate of history lies in these hero’s hands, what meets the blade is yet to be uncovered…

First Thoughts: Well, it’s an ufotable title and this absolutely looks gorgeous so that’s out of the way. I….can honestly see myself be a bit invested in this. I know it has a lot to do with time travel since it does mention changing the course of history and saving a few people here and there and protecting it from bringing on the worst. I will say the leads while not too special but they are capable of getting me interested into caring about them, although the whole “I didn’t do well” enough thing with the younger brother……yeah, I get it, something with that might happen later on the show if he doesn’t improve in his eyes.

But, yeah, this is so far not bad and I could WATCH IT WEEKLY.

I’m MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid and ….. OK, that’s one OK show down.

  1. It’s about Bakumatsu Japan… of course I’m going to watch!

Are you sure this isn’t related to Touken Ranbu Hanamaru, though? All that stuff with the historical revisionists sounds super familiar. That show had such a confusing first episode that I couldn’t get through it, but I’m hoping the smaller number of characters described in this one will make it more palatable.
