TIME OF THE SEASON Spring 2017 Edition: ALICE & ZOUROKU

So……..got an question here? Has there been an anime besides this that got blatant Alice in Wonderland references? *remember Code Geass has a spinoff of that once*

Oh, Oh yeah, there’s that one.

Anyway, here’s Alice & Zouroku.

Plot Summary: A group of young girls possess a mysterious power known as “Alice’s Dream,” which gives them the ability to turn their thoughts into reality. Detained and experimented upon, these youths are locked away in secret until one of them manages to escape. Her name is Sana—a girl with the power to ignore the very laws of physics. When this willful powerhouse crosses paths with a stubborn old man named Zouroku, his carefully-ordered life will never be the same again.

First Thoughts: Well, this show goes deliver an odd yet interesting story even if it hits familiar territory with some girl escaping from this lab and finding someone to take refuge to. However, instead of some younger guy that eventually wants to be her for romantic reasons, it’s an wizened old man with the whole “respect your elders” spiel and he’s an alright character. Actually, so is the lead girl Sana as a matter of fact but the thing here is…..I’m interested but that first episode felt like a chore watching. For a positive, the character interaction elements are the best things of the episode but some of the other elements are dull like the ‘action’ here with some car chase and unflattering CG……oh…..and WHY IS THIS EPISODE 45 MINUTES?!?

Seriously, you could have cut some of that down to your standard 22-24 minute format episode but really? 45 minutes of all that shit? Some of that shit should’ve been cut or something or did what Fuuka did last season and just show 2 episodes back-to-back as no other anime (maybe the Fate series but that’s it) can do a double-length first episode right unless if one of you can name one right out of the bat.

Anyway, I’m not going to write it off solely of that as some things about it are worth watching but it needs to work on its pacing.
“But you didn’t mind MHA‘s pacing problems!!” Yeah, that show got pacing problems but I didn’t fall the fuck asleep and it didn’t take 45 minutes of my time.

It’s a LOW Priority Watch. I guess it’s good for that easy Sunday afternoon when you don’t got shit to do, I guess.

I’m MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid and…..wait, those two other girls are like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, aren’t they?

  1. This one has me curious mostly because I went in knowing nothing. Not sold on it yet but definitely willing to give it some more time.
My favourite Alice in Wonderland theme in an anime was Pandora Hearts but there are heaps of them around (or single episodes like Ouran that borrow characters or ideas). I guess I mostly wonder how this one will be different.
