AS– *gets slap* OW!!
Wait, why are you putting the cuffs on me? *someone hands me a ticket*
What’s this? Saying dirty and lewd words in public? But……this is my blog. You know, basically my mind where anything (OK, almost anything) can go.
OK, there’s more to that but looking into this show that I probably should’ve checked out when it was airing during the Summer 2015 season anime, I probably should’ve gave this a look at when it first premiered. There’s something about the topic in hand that actually has some great commentary that some Westerners can easily get straight from the first episode. YEP! It’s all about forcing sexual suppression and abstinence upon the younger crowd because….you know….
Yeah, you knew I was going with that clip. But it’s not just some simple pamphlets and stupid speeches that you’ll forget. NAH, it’s a law…..a very, very Draconian 1984 type of shit law. As in, if you break it, bad things will happen.
I’m just going to get the plot of the way.
With the introduction of strict new morality laws, Japan has become a nation cleansed of all that is obscene and impure. By monitoring citizens using special devices worn around their necks, authorities have taken extreme measures to ensure that society remains chaste.
In this world of sexual suppression, Tanukichi Okuma—son of an infamous terrorist who opposed the chastity laws—has just entered high school, offering his help to the student council in order to get close to president Anna Nishikinomiya, his childhood friend and crush. Little does he know that the vice president Ayame Kajou has a secret identity: Blue Snow, a masked criminal dedicated to spreading lewd material amongst the sheltered public—and Tanukichi has caught the girl’s interest due to his father’s notoriety.
Soon, Tanukichi is dragged into joining her organization called SOX, where he is forced to spread obscene propaganda, helping to launch an assault against the government’s oppressive rule. With their school set as the first point of attack, Tanukichi will have to do the unthinkable when he realizes that their primary target is the person he admires most.
Now, another thing I noticed about this series as this aired at the same season and year as Prison School, which also has the same themes of being lewd, having a bunch of fan service in there and dirty jokes aplenty. However, after watching Shimoneta……….yeah, this show’s plot is far more interesting then Prison School. In fact, most of what’s going on is far more investing than Prison School.
Yeah, I’m not a fan of that other show as I thought that one got dumber the more it went on and it was just another generic school life anime with tons of fetish eechi elements that almost near hentai territory added in them. But while I say that, Shimoneta isn’t exactly a masterpiece in terms of writing but it got some good ideas in here.
The greatest example being “Law for Public Order and Morals in Healthy Child-Raising” as that reminds me of some attempts (or successes) of puritanical laws that exists in the U.S. and being someone that lived their life growing up in the Bible Belt, yeah, I do notice some of the similarities only that aren’t as wacky and hyper as this because damn, this is silly as shit but in a way that felt entertaining, although some things about the show make you question some character’s actions (specifically one, but we’ll get to that later on).
I know the saying that comedy is subjective and oh, boy….that statement is so true because I can see people being into the show (like most did with Prison School) but it’s also vice-versa. I can see someone saying they are just doing fan service for the sake of doing it and I can’t argue with that opinion as I did felt like that in some scenes but in another way, some do carry a purpose in the show’s intended nature. Also while it got some quips about that that made me think of similar IRL things, it isn’t trying to pretend to be meaningful or insightful (*cough*PhantomWorld*cough*).
On characters, let’s start with our main pervert heroine with a thousand sex puns Ayame Kajo aka Blue Snow……BTW, nice name choice *wink wink*. Now with her, she’s very appealing as a character as she is the defiant one that doesn’t bend to the authorities’ will but you can tell she isn’t just doing this only for the sake of being perverted. She sees this law for the bullshit that it is (and IMO, a frightening law that can make things worse if something like this were to happen in the U.S.) and does want students to know about sexual education as it’s something every teenager should know at that age. Oh and like I said, if you find her sex puns to be annoying or overused, you could be annoyed by that and I got to admit, as much as I like Ayame, those puns are hit and miss.
As for our other main character, Tanukichi Okuma……yeah, he’s cool and all and his past was interesting to know as he’s the son of an terrorist who opposed that law and he wants to leave that shit in the past and move on with his life but of course, he gets into this mess and he’s cool than I anticipated. I thought I was going to get some milquetoast typical wimp character that gets squicky when something sexual happens to him….but to be honest, I don’t blame him at all and hopefully the way those scenes turn out is to say “that shit is disturbing” than side with the other person and speaking of that other person…..
Student Council President Anna Nishikinomiya (a name I fucked up pronouncing on myself) is Okuma’s childhood friend and crush and for a long time since he met her, he got some feelings for her and I can admit it was…OK, a little typical but I didn’t mind that whole aspect of that. Also, she’s reminds me of that preacher’s daughter archetype aka the daughter that is seen to be pure, innocent and abhor lewd things but once she experience that other side, she turns into a whole another character and damn, she’s crazy and hostile as shit!! No, really. As soon as in Episode 4 or 5 I believe, she really wants Okuma to herself and while that might seen like a dream come true for him, it isn’t. You wanna know why?
Yup, everybody knows that infamous scene that summer and yeah, she basically made cookies from her…..well, you get the idea. She’s the ultimate scene stealer of the show and one crazy-ass girl at that.
Some other characters in the show include Otome Saotome, who is an award-winning young artist, who loves to draw explicit artwork…..a lot. Like any moment something lewd is going to happen, she immediately goes for it and there’s Kosuri, the one who joins SOX later on and she’s basically that sneaky little sister type character but pretending to be a little sister to Okuma.
You know, I have been saying a lot of things about comparing it to Prison School and there is one more thing about it…..both are made by the same studio J.C. Staff. and I find the animation here mildly decent although to be honest I wasn’t expecting much here and I did find a bit too bright in some scenes. The opening (“B Chiku Sentai SOX” by SOX) and ending (“Inner Urge” by Sumire Uesaka) themes are quite catchy and it’s a no brainer that they fit in the show well and yet I don’t see myself listening to this outside of the series.
HEY! The dub is being invaded by Panty & Stocking!!! Well, the VA who voiced them in the dub as…you guessed it, Jamie Marchi and Monica Rial are the definite highlights of the dub as Ayame and Anna, respectively and both nailed it instantly. Josh Grelle is solid as Okuma although I do see him to this role…well, him or Aaron Dismuke but Grelle does well in here. And as for the rest of the dub, the script brought out the show’s lewd and crass nature great in English and the other supporting cast ranges from meh to good.
FINAL VERDICT: Yeah, this is a show that I know everyone is NOT going to be on board of but I will say that in terms of its content, it’s one of the better shows that does it and it’s one that actually has an interesting plot along with its titillating and fan service that’s actually organic to the plot. Probably Summer 2015’s most under looked series but one that you should stream first before deciding to buy. Just saying and oh….never, ever, ever, EVER watch this with any other family member, especially ones that isn’t much into anime.
So with this, SOX succeed in their mission with a
Yep, it’s OKAY.
