Anime Discovery – TIME OF THE SEASON Summer 2016 Wrap-Up

Welp, summer’s over…….and you know what?

Good.

I know, I know. I should’ve expected that after coming from the greatness of the spring season but here, I just couldn’t give a damn. Sure, there were a few shows that really caught my eye, especially one that is definitely my candidate of anime of the year and the best of the season but there is definitely some awful titles, including one for my WORST of the year and the bad thing about that, the shows aren’t just bad, they were not worth giving too much attention. In fact, I felt like I was sleep-walking throughout this season because I just couldn’t bring myself to care about most of the shows.

Oh, and I look back at some spring shows I missed back in that season as well.

Now, as usual (for this year), I’m only mentioning the shows that are finished/finishing this season. Once again, Twin Star Exorcists & Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable is not getting a mention here but most likely will the next season (well, Jojo)as it finish.

Oh, and I would talk shit about Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars except that show’s production hasn’t been consistent since it re-aired the 4 episodes in September and I’m pretty much going to drop the show due to lack of interest.

And now….

FLYING WITCH – animated by J.C. Staff – licensed by SENTAI FILMWORKS

Now, usually with this type of anime that has a more relaxed and breezy vibe to it, I would tend to pass it on but I can see why that type of anime can be liked. This one just puts you in a good mood with its warm and colorful surroundings and its charming characters. This is a show that feels like you can relax and do nothing with and actually looks amazing while doing it.

7.5/10 – Low SOLID B.

HAVEN’T YOU HEARD, I’M SAKAMOTO? – Animated by STUDIO DEEN – licensed by SENTAI FILMWORKS

OK, I can admit this show does have its funny moments here and there……sadly, those moments do become stale halfway throughout the show and so does Sakamoto as a character. Yeah, he’s this super awesome cool guy that’s smart, all the ladies want him, all the guys want to be him and…..well, yeah, he’s Mr. Perfect Student boy and I couldn’t care less, even in the emotive moments of the show. It’s far from being the worst anime (that’s a lot worst shows than this one) but this is just……average.

5.5/10 – AN ACQUIRED TASTE

And now for the summer stuff…..

RELIFE – animated by TMS ENTERTAINMENT

Well, this was kinda easy to forget mentioning….for 2 reasons. One of them is that this season for Crunchyroll Premium members, you could binge-watch the whole thing and be done with it and for me, I went with doing it one episode a day and second……this show is definitely 17 Again the anime, just less Zac Efron, more high school drama stuff and looking into what the guy could’ve improve on in his life and it’s……serviceable. Maybe not worth binging but its fine.

6/10 – OK.

Remember when I say I mostly sleep-walk most of this season? Well……..

ALDERAMIN IN THE SKY – animated by MADHOUSE / licensed by CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION
ACTIVE RAID 2nd – animated by PRODUCTION IMS/ORANGE

Yeah, this is mainly part 1 of that. OK, this shows are not bad in the sense of being unwatchable. They are serviceable to watch for background noise and for the former, I expected worse from that and while the story is OK at best, the characters doesn’t leave an everlasting impression but more like “Oh, that guy. Yeah, I forgot.” It’s not exactly one that I’m going to go back for. I know fantasy lovers will probably get a kick out of it but other than that, it’s meh.

As for Active Raid 2nd, it’s the same shit as the first season and once again, felt like watching an procedural cop show but in anime form, only this is not Psycho-Pass…..although it’s slightly better than that sequel. I got nothing else for this so this is another ‘meh’ show.

6/10 – OK.

SERVAMP – animated by Brain’s Base – licensed by FUNIMATION

Welcome to Part 2 and once again, this was…..meh although the show does kick in full gear halfway in. Doesn’t help that the main character is as bland as ice cream with no special toppings and of course, the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP is involved in here and yes, it was lame for the part being. Albeit, some of the funnier and darker moments saved it from being completely dull and it’s one better to watch once and only once (maybe twice if you’re doing the dub the 2nd time.)

5.5/10 – VANILLA.

ENDRIDE – animated by Brains’ Base – licensed by FUNIMATION

No. Why? Another generic-ass Final Fantasy type anime this year? It pretty much plays off the basic formula of normal teenager travels into another world unlike his. It’s the straightforward play-by-play of this genre and I wouldn’t mind it if it was entertaining but it was bland, the leads are mostly there to fuel yaoi fanfic for the fangirls (or fanboys) and everything else felt like an afterthought. This was another sleep-walk of an anime to get through only I couldn’t care less about anyone in here. Avoid.

4/10 – High NOT FEELING THIS

ACE ATTORNEY – animated by A-1 Pictures – licensed by CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION (I guess?)

This was more wasted potential from this show and everyone I know excited for the show at first either drop it or just not give a fuck anymore. To be honest, I don’t blame them. Again, this is not the worst thing I saw the past 2 seasons but the most lackluster title of the year. I may not play the games as most people but I can tell the whole court procedural element was not gluing me in all the way. That and the inconsistent animation throughout….it got better the second half but it was too late for them.

5/10 – VANILLA.

BERSERK (2016) – animated by GEMBA & MILLEPENSEE / licensed by CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION (I guess?)

People seemed to be let down by this new version of Berserk, aren’t you?
I actually didn’t mind this.
I mean, the animation is……yeah, I’m not going to bullshit this. It’s bad. Really bad and as far as the story can go, it’s more watchable and worth investing than most of the fantasy-set titles this year (Yes, I’m checking out Re:Zero in the fall. Don’t worry.) and I did get something from what I liked from the old series from its tone, music, GUTS and the atmosphere throughout. Not a high recommendation for this but you can do worse. A lot worse.

7/10 – High OK.

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM RE:0096 – animated by SUNRISE

OK, again, don’t really have much to say about this one except it was a decent show with some good mecha fight animation and dialogue is fine there, too. I’m not much of a Gundam fan considering I saw only this and Iron Blooded Orphans (currently on Toonami and 2nd season coming this fall) so sorry for the little info of why I’m OK with this.

7/10 – OK.

CUTE HIGH EARTH DEFENSE CLUB LOVE! LOVE! – animated by Studio Comet /licensed by PONYCANYON USA

I…….really got nothing new to say here, either. I mean, I still enjoy the series for what it is: A goofy parody of the concept of magical boys and it still delivers on what it brought us the first time. What else’s……..um, I still like the blonde-haired boy. He’s still my favorite character of the show and the magical boy transformation sequences are still cool, too.
See? I got nothing else. Still, alright show.

7/10 – OK.

ORANGE – animated by TELECOM ANIMATION FILM / licensed by CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION (I guess?)

Romance time-traveling and preventing suicide…….yeah, this is emotionally depressing and heartwarming at the same time. The sparkling growth, love and friendship among our main characters is endearing and often distressing as the show goes further into these characters, especially Kakeru. I wouldn’t say this is the romantic version of Erased as while they got the same element of time travel, they are in different lanes of entertainment although I slightly liked Erased more.

7/10 – OK.

And now for the worst anime…..I got 3…..from least worst to the top worst anime starting with…..

HYBRID x HEART MAGIAS ACADEMY ATARAXIA – animated by PRODUCTION IMS

As bad as this is, you know from the first second this aired that it was going to be bad. Hell, it’s basically borderline hentai considering all the shots that did get censored and most of it is power up by fucking. Call me wrong but it’s basically that. You fuck a girl, lick her tit, grope her, whatever and BOOM! She’s a mecha fighting machine. OK, what else? Generic action plot, generic characters, generic animation….yeah, it’s generic with a side of tits and ass. Maybe it knows what it is and I might give it a pass but I’m not. It’s still a bad show throughout and no amount of pandering is going to change that.

3/10 – Not FEELING THIS

QUALIDEA CODE – animated by A-1 Pictures

Now what happens when the same plot as Hybrid x Heart is played, but only serious? Well, it’s worse than that. At least the hentai parts of the other show kept it interesting but here? Just stupid high-schoolers in war, bickering and wanking on with the plot although it’s not like the plot is any good. It’s confusing and you don’t care to delve deeper into it because there is nothing deeper to this. Another bad action anime from A-1 Pictures, I guess.

3/10

TABOO-TATTOO / animated by J.C. Staff

UGH. This is one of those times in an anime I went from being OK with the show to not liking it to REALLY not liking it to just flat-out HATING IT. Fuck it, I absolutely loathe this anime and what it thinks it’s trying to be! It’s either a dark, edgy, mature show with graphic content! NO WAIT, It also has some goofy shit that’ll drastically alter the tone of this! DAMMIT, this is Akame ga Kill all over again only I’m not dumb enough to fall for it again! The story is bleh, the characters are dull, the unnecessary deaths of said characters are fucking moronic and insulting at that and the action is pitiful and cliché. That’s what this show is: One big-ass ball of CLICHÉ! FUCK THIS WRETCHED WASTE OF A SHOW!

2/10 – CLOWNSHOES!!

And now for the top three shows of the season that were great…..

SWEETNESS AND LIGHTNING – animated by TMS Entertainment

This show definitely lived up to its title as this is definitely one of the most innocent and adorable shows of the season that struck a warm and happy feeling when watching each episode of Kohei and his daughter Tsumugi with them either bonding, cooking and/or reminiscing about her late mother. Avant-garde, it’s not but this is a very genuinely charming show and one that caught me by surprise. I didn’t expect an anime featuring this cute little girl to win me over….and I mean, this girl…..

8/10 – SOLID B.

MOB PSYCHO 100 – animated by BONES – licensed by CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION

So, another show based from ONE’s manga and seeing how a lot of people including myself loved One Punch Man (by the way, Season 2, BITCHES!!!) and with this……well, yeah, this is some good shit. Maybe I’m not as high on it as OPM but it is a different beast of a product with this being more slice-of-life/supernatural vibe than the superhero/comedy vibe from the other one but it didn’t stop it from having stellar animation sequences, a unique art style, and outrageous characters to boot.

8.5/10 – Low FIRST CLASS

And now for the best anime of the season and it is without a doubt……

91 DAYS – animated by SHUKA – licensed by CRUNCHYROLL/FUNIMATION

Shuka, Hiro Kaburagi, Taku Kishimoto…..I thank you guys for creating on what I’m calling right now, not only the best dramatic anime of the season nor just the best anime drama of the year….but best anime in 2016….so far. I have always said that I got a spot soft for revenge stories and each episode unfolds more and more turns, betrayals, violence around the corner. Hell, I know last year I said I loved Gangsta and still do but this anime surpasses that by a bit…..that and this one isn’t based on a manga so there’s that. Everything from the Prohibition setting, the mafia, the action, the dialogue just draws you in and keeps you speculating what is going to happen next.

91 Days is without a doubt the best anime of the summer….and of the year (so far)…. 9/10 – FIRST CLASS!

And once again….the rankings!

And that is it for the summer……and leading to fall, there is not too much to really care about in regards of looking forward to aside from season 2 of IRON BLOODED ORPHANS, DRIFTERS, YURI ON ICE and maybe some other titles in hand but as far as I know, I’m definitely skipping the borefests of the 2nd seasons of Sound! Euphonium and Bungo Stray Dogs. Both first seasons weren’t good and I really don’t feel like putting myself through that again.

And also, I’m going to be looking back on some past shows and since people are on that Re:Zero train the past 2 seasons, I’ll look into that.

As always, I’m MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid and let’s hope Fall isn’t as a drag as Summer was….keyword being HOPE.

  1. Nice wrap up of the season. My feelings about Taboo Tattoo went much the same way: It’s okay, what is this, okay now I hate this, please stop. I really should have dropped it early in the season but ended up watching past my usual drop point and then was more or less committed to being driven crazy by it.

  2. Interesting that you rated Myriad Colours so low, I was actually quite fond of the show. But agreed that Taboo Tattoo is a steaming pile of trash.

    1. Yeah, I do see how Myriad Colors can appeal to some people but for me, I just couldn’t click with it. I just really did not like it that much but if you do, that’s cool, too.

I’m surprised it was that show you pointed out and not something like Grimgar or Rakugo (yeah, I admit, not a fan of those either) since everybody is praising those titles and like I said before, you like them, cool by me.

And yes, Taboo Tattoo is some hot garbage.

      1. Given the glu of new anime each season, it would be silly to assume that all of it would appeal to everyone, so it’s cool that Myriad Colours didn’t click with you.

I did and do adore Rakugo, that is one of my favourites for years!

Yeah, the less said about Taboo Tattoo, the better/
