So, if you’ve been following me on Twitter or Facebook (depending on who’s on my FB), you noticed that I got a favorite anime director I’ve been following since discovering his work.
Some say their favorite is Hayao Miyazaki, others are either Satoshi Kon or Akiyuki Shinbo but for me, the top director for me is the one and only Shinichiro Watanabe.
Oh, and spoiler for this, 4 out of 5 of his anime is on that list and on to #17…..
This is a different beast for Watanabe to do since this is his first work that’s from adapted material and this centers on jazz and lucky enough, Watanabe got enough experience with this and the addition of adding that sweet Yoko Kanno music in there as well. While it has the slice-of-life high school format that seems tiring in anime nowadays, they made the characters felt like actual and sensible people in life and not some cliché high-school crap or boring fluff (like in other shows that will go nameless). The bonding between the three main characters is endearing and makes the drama worth watching and the music…..come on, Yoko Kanno and her delightful sounds are always a pleasure.
Kids on the Slope…..proof that you can’t sleep on Watanabe even if he’s doing an adaptation.
