About a year ago in 2013, an anime called Samurai 7 ended its run on newly [adult swim] run, Toonami and it’s been about almost a year then since it came back. An anime called Soul Eater took its place and at first, I thought the show seemed like a typical generic shonen anime but actually it turned out to be a good show at the end. But now, in 2014, a spin-off of the same series has arrived in anime form, but does it have what it takes to be good…….or NOT!?

Plot Summary: The Death Weapon Meister Academy—DWMA for short, is a special institution for humans who are born with the power to turn into weapons and the wielders of these weapons, called meisters. While the students of the “EAT” class train themselves to become warriors of justice, the “NOT” class is for those who just want to control their powers with the intent to not become a threat to others and to themselves. Tsugumi Harudori is a halberd demon weapon who takes part in the NOT class and befriends two meisters, Meme Tatane and Anya Hepburn and is indecisive about which one of them to choose as her partner. The series follows the daily lives of Tsugumi and her friends as they learn the ropes of the DWMA and have occasional encounters with the characters of the main series.
Thoughts on it so far: Welp, unlike many people (mainly fools and dumb motherfuckers), people really wanted to be just like the original Soul Eater because if something changes, apparently it must be bad. Yet here’s the thing: I said that I didn’t think the original Soul Eater was going to be good when seeing it for the first time and now I feel the same way with this one. The three main characters do have likability in them (albeit one of them being a typical absent-minded character and an airhead), although it can take time adjusting to them and as for the cameos of the original Soul Eater cast and the cries of “how come Soul didn’t speak?”…….Well, it’s only the first episode and he might have a speaking role later but the show can’t be too dependent on the first series, we got to know more about the 3 main characters than just whining about “MOAR BLACK STAR!!” I will say that I’m not really a fan of the new character designs. I don’t loathe it but it felt like it loses some of the uniqueness in the original show although some designs from there are still intact. The moe design doesn’t mean it’s bad. Unneeded, but not horrible.
This could turn out to be like the first series for me, which is why I’m going to CONTINUE BI-WEEKLY, considering that this one isn’t exactly high priority but it’s worth taking a look at.
And until then, I’m MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid, bringing all the souls and weapons to one meister.
And coming up, for the first time since ever (I think), we’re going to be looking at an sports anime…..from the guy that brought you The Tatami Galaxy & Kaiba.
