Anime Discovery – TIME OF THE SEASON Winter 2014 Edition: PUPA

So it’s a horror show that is also features a brother/sister element in it? I hope it doesn’t get too incestral or something, although it already sounds better than most of the shows airing. Also, prepare for some gore.

Director: Tomomi Mochizuki

Animation Studio: Studio DEEN

Streaming: Crunchyroll

Licensor: Unlicensed (at the time of this review)

Plot Summary: Growing up with an abusive father, Utsutsu is highly protective of his younger sister Yume. One day, Yume sees a red butterfly and contracts the strange Pupa virus. She begins to sprout grotesque wings and to indiscriminately attack both animals and humans. Hoping to find a way to stop the advance of the virus, Utsutsu seeks out Maria, a researcher who knows the secret of Pupa. He decides to sacrifice his own body as live bait for the sake of saving Yume.

Thoughts on it so far: I’m going to make this short considering since this show is total of 12 episodes and with it being 4-5 minutes per episode as it can manage to tell a horrific tale although it probably should’ve been longer, more like either a standard 22-minute 12-episode series or better yet an OVA concerning if you add up the episodes, it really is an hour-long OVA (well, 50 minutes but I’m doing an approximate add-up). The story aspect is fine and while I’m not that guy that gets easily scared in horror movies even if they’re good, it does get creepy in some good places that doesn’t go into head-stuck-in-ass territory. Animation-wise, it doesn’t seem that bland as I thought it was considering Studio DEEN isn’t really high on my favorite anime studio list (well, they are higher than ARMS but that’s for another show coming up) and this time, it’s in their favor.

Yeah, I’m going to WAIT TO MARATHON THIS mainly because with its length in each episode, you can just watch it in a breeze in an hour rather than do it for 4 minutes a week.

And until then, this is MAK2.0 aka The Blue Hybrid, bringing the Pupa virus to the…….OK, no, I’m not even going to finish that.

And next time, I look at one of the more interesting titles (to me) of the Winter Anime season, WIZARD BARRISTERS.
