For this month and possibly the next if I go slow with this, I will be reviewing anime titles from studio BONES. People, of course, know Studio Bones actually being the original staff from Sunrise title and anime classic Cowboy Bebop, as well as the movie. They are also responsible for many well-known anime such as Eureka Seven, Wolf’s Rain, Soul Eater, & Fullmetal Alchemist and before you ask, NO, I WON’T review Fullmetal Alchemist or any other media from that. That’s too much time and I don’t have enough time to review any piece of it. So let’s get this show on the road.
DEM美しい骨格 Chapter 1: Bastardo balistico (弾道野郎) / Ballistic Bastard
About 6 years ago, a young man, whose full government name will not be mentioned but let’s just call him MAK, was just an ordinary high school student doing the basics of his ordinary life with some setbacks like any other person but on this faithful day, he went out to lunch to order him a Philly Cheesesteak while trying to avoid the usual crowd of jackasses you always fuck with him and his money as they do with everybody and as he exits out, the head leader Dice comes at him and said, “Hmmm, Mr. Big Spender, I see you got the most expensive thing on the menu. No wonder why you coming up short on cash this week.” MAK responded with, “That and you know you’re not about to keep jacking me for change, Dice, besides I’m broke for the rest of the week, so HA-HA, motherfucker.” Then Dice punched out MAK for blatantly dissing him in his face and call his boys out to teach him a lesson, “You know, I really hate that I have do this……Actually, no, I enjoy kicking your ass and taking your money equally.” Then the guys picked up MAK and they hold his arms so he won’t escape as Dice keeps beating him up until MAK poked one of the guys’ eyes out and made a run for it. “WHAT THE FUCK?!?!” Dice shouted, “How in the Hell you let a poke in the eye bother your ass? Chase that N**** down!!” So MAK run all through the streets of Eastin City avoiding the guys and while two trucks was delivering packages for the largest supernatural drug cartel in Eastin City but while MAK was being chased in the streets, both trucks crashed, which took out two of Dice’s henchmen and suddenly a large blue mist separated MAK from those guys but MAK was coughing up a storm and try not to inhale the mist as it might seem toxic and potentially dangerous and when he got out of the mist, he ran into his home and as he got there, he became more and more tired and then he crashed……
I think I have been too harsh whenever I said that I’m not interested in any form of media that is close to an RPG or has Middle Earth elements but that statement still stand by me because there’s nothing remotely interesting about that genre, aside from most Final Fantasy games (I’m not sure about the other media with the Final Fantasy name) but I’m mostly willing to give one of them a shot especially with this particular title, which has recommended (sort of) from a fellow reviewer I know.
Pacifica Casull is the most feared and hated person by the followers of the God Mauser. Known as the Scrapped Princess, she is the poison that will destroy the world. To avoid being killed by the zealots of Mauser, Pacifica and her adoptive brother and sister leave the village of Manhurin. Her brother, Shannon, is an expert with the sword while Racquel is proficient with magic. At every step of the way, however, someone is constantly trying to kill Pacifica, hoping to somehow avert the catastrophe that is supposed to befall the world on her 16th birthday.
I will admit that I like the plotline for this title as it deals with a burden of being born with a curse and that you have to live with that of people constantly hating you for what you are because of your title yet once you know them, they are not that bad of a person that they make you out to be. Plus, the show is run of a quick and constant pace as it doesn’t feel too long whenever you watch it, as in watching the first 6 episodes is 2 hours long but you don’t think that it’s dragging or wasting your time.
I got to say for the characters, there is one flaw within the characters of the show: NONE OF THEM ARE UNLIKABLE! As in, I find every character of the show to be enjoyable to watch once you get to know them in the story. In the beginning, the main character Pacifica Cassul may act like a brat in some of the episodes but you don’t really hate her since it wasn’t that obnoxious or overbearing. You really feel for the character that’s going through his status as the Scrapped Princess, being forsaken to that, and it helps that she can be a sweet person on the inside. Shannon Cassul is the straightforward older brother, meaning he doesn’t have time to fool around when it comes to protecting his sister and is a great swordfighter. Raquel is the oldest of the siblings and she is very calm and motherly figure of the show, which is what I liked about her as in groups, people do need that type of person who assures themselves that things can work out. Other characters include Leo, the noble yet naïve knight who vows to protect Pacifica, and also has a crush on her, too, and Winia, the introverted and lonesome maid who later joined the Cassul siblings into their adventure.
The animation from Studio BONES is very 2000s vintage considering as of now, it’s been almost 10 years since its creation in 2003 and it doesn’t look aged at all but the artwork, character designs and backgrounds are very fluid and strikingly impressive by today’s standards or even the standards of 6 years ago.
Musically, I can say for the opening theme, it seems like a bit of Scottish and/or medieval charm was heavily influenced by that, as well as the background music. The ending music, I didn’t feel much of that influence on there but it is serviceable for the ending theme.
Lastly, I got to say on the Bandai/Bang Zoom dub is that this is one of the most well-done dubs I have ever watched. It also helps that Crispin Freeman, not only voices Shannon, but he is also the ADR director and writer of the show and it shows that Freeman can be awesome behind the screen as well as being the voice. Kari Wahlgren as Pacifica is one of her better roles of likable characters, right next to Haruko from FLCL and Saya from Blood+ and Bridget Hoffman does a great and nuanced job as always playing the cool and calm role of Raquel and even supporting roles filled by Michelle Ruff, Yuri Lowenthal, and Kirk Thornton among others are decent in their roles.
FINAL VERDICT: I can easily say that Scrapped Princess is one of those shows that you should definitely check out (if you can, since you-know-who has folded). It has a great amount of pacing, enjoyable characters with great development and something that can combine things you don’t even like in anime into saying you love.
As much as I love this show, the rating I will give for ScraPrin is….
9.5/10 – First Class
As the next few hours came, MAK was starting to feel awake as his sister woke up him saying, “Hey! I have been shouting your name for the last few minutes, lazy ass! You do have a class today.” MAK then made a comeback, “Really? Said the girl who sleeps 24/7 daily and doesn’t do shit around here. Shut the fuck up and wait a damn minute.” And after that, she went and through a shoe at him, “OW!!” and she laughed her ass all the way downstairs. As he is getting ready, he notice something blue going inside his skin and it wasn’t his veins and it was glowing, possibly more than a nightlight and he wondered if it had something to do with that incident yesterday and so, after he eat his breakfast, he left to go to school with his usual route and then out of nowhere, a black Suburban pulled out in front of him with Dice coming in the passenger’s side and this other guy that MAK never seen before. “So, Dice, this is the one that owes you money and offed your people?” the guy asked. “Now you must be wondering who the fuck I am, huh? Well, let’s just say I’m a businessman who doesn’t take much shit when it comes to people owing me cash, especially if it’s my younger brother’s money. The name’s Cane.” His name was Rick Cane to be exact and he offer MAK to shake hand to assure him everything will be calm but knowing that MAK was kind of gullible, he went for the hand shake and then Rick gripped it with his might, hurting MAK’s hand and then punched him to the ground and pulled out a gun and aimed it at him, “Hey, little bro?”, “Yeah?”, Dice asked. “Do you want me to shoot him in the chest or put it in between his eyes for a closed casket?” “Wait, y’all are going to kill me for some petty cash? You fucking whore’s ti—“, then Dice punched and kicked MAK while he’s down and suddenly, the blue effect in his skin was kicking in and as they were getting ready to pull the trigger and MAK was about to embrace his death, he found himself on top of the roof. Both brothers wondering where he could have gone and MAK decided to keep him out of watch until they leave. With him now having this power, he needs to know how to control it well.
Tune in next time on DEM LOVELY BONES and the next anime du jour is…….
